A review I read said the Premiere can display, but not upscale to, 1080p because it would have meant a 6+ month delay waiting for new hardware from Broadcom. The implication seemed to be that TiVo would upgrade the Premiere to that new hardware when it becomes available, since that feature is what TiVo wanted to begin with.
Personally, I'm pretty content with my HD, the new UI won't be available for months after the Premiere debuts, and the better networking performance of the Premiere doesn't do much for me since the TiVo can't handle video and audio located on an NFS or Samba remote filesystem, which is where all my media is stored. Ergo, waiting for a hardware revision and for the new software to sort itself out seems a good upgrade strategy.

Anybody waiting for that to happen will be waiting for a long time. No where has TiVo implied they will be changing the architecture in 6 months.
I can't imagine a hardware revision for at least 12 months, if then. Waiting for the software revisions, maybe, but I suspect you'll be waiting for a while if you wait on hardware.
To answer your question - No, not waiting.

Changing the innards with a drop-in replacement isn't "changing the architecture". I was thinking more like 12-18 months, actually, especially since I think this thing will be a dud at launch forcing them to quickly scrap it and release a Rev 2 Premiere.

Won't a good 1080p TV upscale lower-resolution signals on its own? Does the Tivo have to do it?

Wow. I'm glad somebody actually said what I've been thinking all this time.
The Premiere DVRs are clearly not aimed at us diehard TiVo owners otherwise they would have included some of the numerous suggestions that have made here on how to make the S4 a kickass product.
I'm actually hoping that TiVo has a "trick up their sleeve" regarding the Premiere and they will surprise us with it after launch. Nobody has actually opened a S4 yet so just maybe there could be 2 extra tuners, built in bluetooth, or true 1080p upscaling waiting to be unlocked down the line.

What besides the FSI and PiG has been suggested? And don't include "Built in TA" and "Tru2Way" because they are not feasible.

As for tivogurl's comments...TiVo could refresh the Premiere with a new box based on BCM7410 (with 1080p60 upscaling) in 12-18 months, much as they replaced the original Series3 about 15 months after its introduction. They will likely need to replace the chip if they want to advertise ENERGY STAR compliance next year, because new ES requirements go into effect for all new boxes manufactured after January 1, 2011.

I don't want my TiVos to do any scaling. I just want native output and let my external scalers or the TVs internal scalers to scale the image to 1080P.
And if the Premiere had extra tuners, they would use it in the marketing as a future upgrade.

Yeah, thanks. I actually saw your review in another thread after I wrote that. So no hidden tuners - bummer. :( It would have made for a nice surprise 4-6 months down the road.
