View Full Version : A bit of a rant (I ordered a Premiere)

So, I ordered one of these. I have some expectations. I also expect to be a bit dissapointed given Tivo's track record.

1) My Tivo HD audio does not work WELL on my receiver. It seemed to work find when it was hooked up to the bedroom receiver. And the Series 3 seemed to work fine on my Yamaha RX-V3900. The Tivo HD makes HORRIBLE sounds when audio is interrupted (ffwd, channel change) to my Yamaha RX-Z7 (which is very similar in design to the 3900.) The Series 3 is currently dead. I am hoping the Premier audio works perfectly.

2) Streaming movies from Netflix works ok, but aspect ratio is OFTEN messed up; this requires MANUALLY LEAVING the movie, changing the aspect ratio of the Tivo and going back to the Tivo. One would hope they did some work on this for the Premier? (I have my doubts)

3) Zooming in for letter boxed movies ( like from Turner Classic,) looks bad. I would hope the scaler in the new box works better

Ok, I am done. I am crossing my fingers for a better Tivo experience

#1 I believe is a known issue with Yamaha receivers.

2) Is a problem with Netflix... the same thing happens even on Xbox 360 Netflix.

3) I believe is a "problem" with the channel. A good scaler won't help poor digitization/compression. (This is why SD can look worse on HD sets than on an SD set.)

This is independent of TiVo. Use Zoom/Wide Zoom on your TV to get the correct ratio. No need to leave the movie.

My XBox 360 worked perfectly on a few movies I had these issues with (and you need to PAY money to use Netflix with the 360 via Gold membership, or I would have fixed it. No TV setting could correct the aspect issues I had. They were with 2.35:1, and Tivo was displaying it wrong. I realize not everyone understands all the ins and outs of aspect ratios, but believe me, I understand the issues pretty well, and there was simply no solution except to exit out of the movie and set aspect to panel as I recall.

With regards to #1 and Yamaha receivers, the Series 3 and the Yamaha RX-V3900 worked perfectly well together. So I have to blame Tivo, not Yamaha, IMO.

There's yet another issue with output format and Yamaha receivers involving an EDID issue, and I was thinking BOTH parties were to blame. A Gefen HDMI detective solves the problem though.

Another issue I had with the Tivo HD and the Yamaha Z7 I never saw with the Series 3 and the RX-V3900 was that audio shuts off when the TV shuts off. That worked perfectly in the past.

Tivo does not play nicely over HDMI at all times, unfortunately. It's better than some Motrotorla cable boxes I had read about, though.

There is most definitely an issue with certain Yamaha receivers and Tivo.. I brought back a Yamaha RX-V465 because it made terrible noises when changing channels on the Tivo. I ended up getting a Denon AVR-2309CI and the problem went away.

When I got a new receiver I picked Denon for a number of reasons, but the clicking issue on Yamaha was one. Denon works fine, except that sometimes when in standby-pass through it loses the volume until I switch to a SD channel then back to HD.

IMO, audio issues is likely a Tivo issue, but I could be wrong. As I say the Series 3/3900 combo worked fine, and the Z7 uses practically the same design ( I have the service manuals for both.)

I've never used standby pass through so maybe that is why I never had an issue with a Denon 3806, 2807, and 3808.

FWIW I have no such issues with my RX-V3800 ...

Maybe it's a hit or miss thing with certain Yamaha receivers and certain Tivos. Is the audio to your 3800 via HDMI or optical?

I have the problem with either interface, which makes me want to blame Tivo.

I don't know. There's also an issue with the CEC settings that I turned it off. So, probably some HDMI handshake issues, which not that uncommon with many devices.

It's not a big deal, but just a little frustrating sometimes. The goal was to be able to watch Tivo through the TV speaker with the option of going through the receiver. We rarely use the receiver with the Tivo, so maybe I'll just send it directly to the TV.
