View Full Version : Would you get a Premiere mainly to stop green screens?
As a TivoHD and Time Warner Manhattan subscriber, the worst thing about the Tivo is the screeching green screens. If it turns out the Premiere is immune to the green screen problem as older Tivos were, would you get it? Despite the hassle and cost that it would entail, I would be sorely tempted to say yes. Anyone else?

I've never had a green screen on any of my nine TiVos. So there isn't a poll option for me.

Huh!? What the hell is a 'screeching green screen'!? Sounds like a specific problem some of you are having in certain areas, but it's not a general TiVo issue. If it was, we'd all be experiencing it, right?

I only have a Series 2 and a Series 3, but I've never had one either. So, I guess we'll have to choose "No", since we're not getting them to stop green screens. :)

I don't understand why "I don't have a green screen problem" is not an option.

do you mean when the box has a hard drive error and it says something akin to "the box has experienced a serious error and will try to fix itself dont unplug this may take some time" ?
if so and its happening alot then your drive is probably going bad.

Obviously another poll asking people that actually have the problem to comment and smarta**es piling on to say they don't have any problems. Don't have the problem, don't post in the thread.

If everyone posting has a green screen problem then that would imply 100% of users get green screens. I've never heard of them.

Had my Tivo HD for over 1 year and never had the green screen :D
As Stormspace pointed out, this thread and poll is directed at those of us who get the green screen with the TivoHD. If you don't and don't have a clue what the problem is, consider yourself blessed!
If you're interested to learn what some fellow Tivo users have to live with, this thread here in the TivoHD section provides all the gory details. It's actually one of the longest, currently active threads here, 21 pages and counting, which is why I'm a little surprised many people aren't aware of the problem:
http://tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=418924&page=21
To make a long story short, green screens appear to be caused by a combination of certain cable channel signals and the hypersensitivity/lack of adequate tolerance in the TivoHD tuner for these signals. This is informed speculation since I don't believe the cause has ever been publicly confirmed by Tivo. Only the TivoHD seems to be vulnerable to the green screen; older Tivo series - and hopefully, the Tivo Premiere - appear to be immune. Whatever the trigger is, when it happens, the TivoHD crashes and emits an incredibly piercing, steady tone through the audio channel accompanied by a green video signal. The Tivo is totally immobilized until it is rebooted. The green screen is unpredictable and no one has figured out a way to prevent it except to stop watching or recording those specific channels that trigger the green screen. Obviously that's not an ideal solution. The problem also seems to come and go; sometimes you get it on a daily, even hourly basis and other times, weeks and months can pass before it occurs again. Time Warner systems seem to be especially prone to trigger green screens.
For those of us that have a TivoHD and live with a cable system that triggers green screens, it's frustrating and painful to come home, turn on the TV and be hit with the green screen screech. It's like a fire alarm. And of course, all scheduled recordings during the length of the green screen are lost.

I've got a TiVo HD in NYC, and I occasionally get the green screen. It coincides with a screeching noise that makes my dog basically go berzerk. But no .... it's infrequent ... so I won't be upgrading my box to avoid the rare annoyance.

I called Tivo about the Green Screen last year on both my TivoHDs. They told me it's because of too much signal coming into the Tivo. They said to put a cable attenuator on the line.
I put a 9db attenuators on both my Tivos and I haven't had the problem in over 6 months.

Never had a green screen here in 2+ years of TiVo HD.

Yes, I would, because I am at my wits end with my @)!#&* TIVO!
I just found this poll as I was going to post a query in the Premiere sub-forum to see if any previous victims of the GSAS issue had solved it by purchasing the new box - as I sit here and watch my Tivo crash yet again today.
Anybody - especially those in the NY-TriState area on Time Warner Cable, who had a TivoHD that suffered from the dreaded Green Screen and Siren, who now has a Premiere - have you seen ANY instances of that behavior?
I'm willing to buy a Premiere, but I'm so sick of this problem that I might throw it out the window if it happens to me with a new box as well.

Hi Kika -
We know each other from that other thread about the Green Screens with Siren. I got the Premiere in May and have not had another green screen since. And I was getting them ALL THE TIME. That is not to say it is completely stable - I have had to reboot it about once a week for freezes or pixelating. But no siren sound that will make the dog run from the room. While not perfect, it is a vast improvement.
Good luck - pgreene

Hi Priscilla,
I'm so glad to hear that the Premiere is working out for you!
I think I'm going to give it another month or two just to make sure.
I remember that the Tour de France coverage last year caused it to happen 10 times a day. (If you babysat it - if not, it just skipped recording the entire month!)
If the NYC TWC Premiere owners make it through that, then I'll be convinced - and maybe my dog will stop hiding in the kitchen! LOL;)

Although I never got the actual screeching, my HD was very sensitive to the signal on certain channels and would reboot or lockup often while recording or just left on those channels. When I first got my TPXL I left the HD connected and ran them side by side recording exactly the same things. After two weeks and continued reboots on the HD on problem channels I decided to replace the HD as well with a Premiere. I run the SD menu's and have not had a reboot or freeze yet on either.
From my point of view the Premiere is WAY more tolerant of signal issues than the HD was.
