I have Comast coming out to do my install on sunday. I wouldn't have the new tivo until well it ships sometime next month. Is it possible to get a cablecard from the install and just hold on to it until my new tivo arrives? Do installers carry those with them usually...

I know some Comcast installers do carry spare cable cards in their vans, but I don't know if they are allowed to give you one without you actually ordering one and I doubt they'll leave one with you without actually installing it in a device. No harm in asking though. You might get lucky. :D

Remember, if you've ordered a Premier, you need a multistream (M-Card) cablecard for it. The Premiers only have 1 cablecard slot.

Yeah I guess I'll try. I wish I had the tivo before they did the install. Some places say 3-27-10 for release while others say 4-12-10 I wish I knew which one :-)

Might be different in your area, but in SJ, they have to physically install the m-card. They wouldn't just leave it. But trueturbo is right, never hurts to try.

What do they charge to install it? And how much is an M-Card? Also do you have to pay a monthly fee for the cable card?

Depends on what the gong rate to call out an engineer is in your area. I think it's about $30 around here. You don't pay for the M-Card, per se. The hardware is free. You pay for the service. How much you pay depends on the deals you strike. I have Comcast Triple Play which includes one of their HD DVRs for free, but they charge me $7.49 a month for the M-Card in my TiVo.

Aw I did not know that. So on top of the tivo fee of $13 a month I have to pay comcast $8 just for the cable card. That really sucks

Please, do some research before you go off the deep end!

If you want a DVR with your Comcast service, you either get one of their crappy OEM DVRs or a third-party DVR like a TiVo. Either way, if you want to watch encrypted digital channels, you need a cablecard.

The Comcast DVR has a cablecard pre-installed in it. It's exactly the same cablecard that they provide you for your TiVo. With most Comcast packages, you get 1 DVR included in the package price. Think of it as you get 1 cablecard included in the package price. If you don't opt for an OEM DVR, you will get the cablecard for your TiVo included in your package.

Call your local provider and get the details for your area.
