DirecTiVo units are for DirecTV only.
They can't be used with any other type of satellite service, and certainly not with cable.
As for a Series 3 replacing an "Explorer" box...
With cable cards, the Series 3 TiVos will act as their own cable box, but can't handle true 2-way, and so you wouldn't be able to do Pay Per View or On Demand, if I understand right. (Tho' it's possible you might be able to order by phone, but how/if the TiVo would then tune the channel I'm not clear on.)
There's also the matter of "switched video", when a cable company decides to only feed certain channels to your neighborhood when someone tries to tune them (so they don't have to fill their cables with every channel at once).
Cable boxes can "order" such "switched" channels, but even with cable cards a TiVo would need yet another attachment (an "adapter" of some kind) to get the "switched" channels.
Oh...
This isn't the forum for the Series 3.
It's only a forum for discussing Comcast cable boxes that are running TiVo software.
