Well I changed my mind and might pick one of these up at some point. Apparently we can keep the old UI. Now if only I could figure out a way to put it in the S3 enclosure...

I think tivo's design team peaked with the S3. However the premier does look better than the TivoHD.

Why would you want the old UI?

It would be nice if it was an HD version of the old interface. Same look but crisper graphics and smaller text to fit more on the screen. The grid listings would benefit nicely. I'm sure it's SD only for those without an HDTV.

Why would you want the old UI?

Because the new interface is bloated with things many people don't want and looks to be very slow due to reliance on downloading pictures and graphics.

the premiere will actually ship with the old 'classic' UI as TiVo gets the new UI whipped into shape. A couple of the blogs like engadget have reported on this aspect.

TiVo is figuring out what they cache versus pull over the wire as needed

Egad this is going to be a mess... imagine pulling stuff over the wire when you're watching TV, all the time.

Hello bandwidth caps! TiVo will be to ISPs what the iPhone is to AT&T in terms of being a bandwidth hog.

I just saw a video on engadget showing the new interface. Hopefully, they can speed this thing up; the rendering of some of the actor thumbnails were slow.

I also don't buy into the new interface. It's too busy. The current interface is easy to use and clean.

I sue the tIvo search and have several multiple tivocasts that pull in the background and watch Netflix streaming. Have not run into any problems with that

I recommend that folks take a look at the video linked above. It sure looks like the GUI is running slowly because it is slow rather than because it is waiting to download content from the net.

I don't know if pausing or stopping the live video feed in the upper right corner would speed things up or not. I just have horrible visions of flash ads flickering in the "Discovery Bar" while the GUI loads ever so slowly. Is this really an upgrade from the Tivo Series 3?

Yeah, the Premiere is gonna be a slow bloated pig. I had a HTPC a few years ago that downloaded pics and even cached some.. but I abandoned the whole thing as I use my internet ALOT and it was a 24-7 bandwidth hog and was still slow as heck in use.
Nice concept.. but until we all have blistering fast internet.. this is just gonna be frustrating to say the least.
I wonder if using the old interface will stop the 24-7 internet info scraping?

Yeah it looks like even the text is taking a long time to appear. The live video in the corner should not affect it at all.

TiVo must certainly recognize the importance of caching for release. They can certainly cache images for a user's season passes, recommended shows, etc.
