I mentioned in another thread that TiVo had only stated 7 non-descript words on a not for public invitation: "Inventing the DVR was just a warmup." Had TiVo spent millions on repetitive, obnoxious advertising, then I'd say yes, TiVo over-hyped this announcement. If people had elevated their expectations too high, that's not TiVo's fault.

I usually agree with you, but what were we to expect from that type of announcement? It's not about what they actually said but what was implied by those 7 words. 'Just a warmup' implies they have taken the DVR game to a whole new level when in fact, all they did was make it look prettier and combined the various and currently available search methods into one search method.

I honestly didn't know what to expect. The teasers with the (Premiere) cableCARD instructions in the HD boxes almost cinched it that it was going to be hardware related, but there was always the chance that it could be some new service update to existing hardware, too. Maybe I'm not as optimistic with my expectations, but I was definitely curious. I am mildly disappointed that the HDUI won't be coming to the existing hardware, but not having a great expectation of it occurring kept me from being greatly disappointed.

I really do like my Tivo HD and I was looking forward to the next Tivo box. But this Premiere seems to be much ado about nothing.
So you get essentially a new search interface. You do not get four tuners, you do not get streaming capabilities, you do not get a connection to sites like Hulu.
Does this new box have more than just a new search interface?
Oh...I could download application games for it. WOW! That's what I want!!!!!
ok...I'm a little ticked off. I've been waiting for something that really integrated televsion and internet content. I have to be missing something.

Note: My wife and I are Tivo evangelist. We love the product since we purchased our first one in 2002 and then purchased the Series 3 when it was still $800...OUCH and added additional space.
My thoughts are in line with everyone else here in this thread. Nothing really for my Series 3 and not enough to justify an upgrade cycle and I WANT to spend. In fact, VOD, additional tuners or a cure for the streaming problem ala Moxi would have gotten me to jump.
Expectations were high because 1. the message on the invitation (it went to Engadget, Gizmodo, etc. do you NOT think it wouldn't get on to the Internet) 2. 3 years between hardware refreshes left a lot of us wanting something spectacular. If I had seen this release in 2008 then I would have gotten excited. Early 2009, maybe I feel ok. However, 2010 and you are WAY behind at this point. If you can't even get your core base excited about the product (33% in one of the poles say they definitely will buy) that spells a lot of problems. I am trying to understand what problems Tivo was trying to solve on this release. For Tivo's sake I'm hoping they have a DirecTivo coming real quick because things are going to get ugly if they do not.
Yeah, apparently TiVo didn't get all of the message. At least 4 tuners would have been nice. Make an XXL unit with 4 tuners and I'd have probably stayed in the TiVo camp. But with this flop I'm now finally firmly in the Windows Media Center camp.

Well, I have a wait and see approach on both the Tivo Premiere and the iPad.
Still, I think I am far more likely to replace my Series 3 with a Tivo Premiere than to replace my iPhone (or laptop) with an iPad.
