Tuned in late to the preshow coverage on E! Thought Joan Rivers was supposed to be part of their preshow coverage, but didn't see/hear her. Did they say why she wasn't there?

Ah, I thought this was the awards show that Joan was going to return to E! for, guess I misunderstood.

Ricky has been very entertaining.

Sophia Loren looked AMAZING! Wowee!!

Julianna Margulies' thank you speech sounded like a dig at NBC.

Paraphrasing: "Thank you CBS for putting on a drama at 10pm..."

Not really. He even had a couple of good lines. Including that animation are for adults who take drugs.

It seemed a LOT more poorly produced than in prior years, especially with regard to time. Why should the rest of the winners have to have their speeches cut short because Mo'Nique took 20 minutes to waddle up to the stage?

They also seemed incapable of getting decent shots of the winners as they rose, and there were lots of strange missed cuts between Gervais and a camera panning incredibly quickly.

For 75 years old she is beyond belief, but she always has been.
They should put her photo in the dictionary next to W-O-M-A-N!
Gives this old gal hope, she does!

Agreed. As much as I enjoyed Avatar and thought it was an amazing technical achievement, it's by no means a best picture.

I wish Dexter would have won, but I am supremely happy that Michael C Hall FINALLY got a win. To have John Lithgow also win for his role was icing on the cake.

I wish I would have watched the show, especially since MCH finally won. Thank goodness for youtube. I watched both of their speeches. MCH is just the best. Lithgow is so eloquent. It was pure joy to see both of them win!

Of course it was. Lot's of NBC bashing going on last night. They certainly deserve it.

Happy that "Glee" won best TV comedy or musical. I was worried when it didn't pick up any acting awards (three nominations). Also happy "The Hangover" won best movie comedy or musical. That movies was just all kinds of awesome. And too funny they had Iron Mike Tyson up there helping to accept the award. :)

Just curious: did you actually see all the nominees in the category to be able to make such a broad statement? The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Bastards, and Up in the Air were all amazing, IMO. I thought Precious was less so, but still head and shoulders above Avatar as a Best Picture candidate for any award.

I guess it's still okay to knock obese people. It appeared to me that most people had difficulty navigating between the tables and chairs to the stage. And you must remember that they are drinking throughout the show. So navigation gets harder as the night wears on.

They also seemed incapable of getting decent shots of the winners as they rose, and there were lots of strange missed cuts between Gervais and a camera panning incredibly quickly.

And when they introduced Alfre Woodard's daughter as Miss Golden Globe or whatever she is, they cut to Alfre's table instead of really letting us see the girl.

The show was poorly directed. Lots of bad, awkward camera cuts.

But they did seem to keep things on time.

To be fair, the girl was just standing there doing nothing with her arms at her sides as they announced her and the producers probably felt it best to cut and run. Can't say I blame them.

Agreed. As much as I enjoyed Avatar and thought it was an amazing technical achievement, it's by no means a best picture.I really was wowed by Avatar, but that plot was kinda weak and preachy. And anyone that didn't see the ending coming a mile away needs to turn in their moviewatcher card.

But her award was very early in the night. Drinking should not have been an excuse in the first 15 minutes of the show...unless you're Mel Gibson. :)

When measuring the seasons as a whole, I would've given the award to either Dexter or True Blood (I don't watch House). However, Mad Men's season finale was so good that it probably pushed them over the top (although the same could probably have been said for Dexter).

Well what was it really up against?? Nothing so great. I'm not the least bit shocked it won.
The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds and Up in the Air were all vastly superior. I haven't seen Precious, but I imagine if I had I would've been more impressed with the movie as a whole than I was with Avatar. Avatar was an amazing technological achievement, but the story had me thinking it was ripping off any number of movies (Dances With Wolves, Return of the Jedi, Top Gun, etc., etc.); plus it was remarkably predictable.

Unfortunately, as one movie critic has said, this year we're likely to see a repeat of 1994, when numerous superior movies (Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption) were beaten out for the Best Picture Oscar by the inferior box office blockbuster.

How does the HFPA evaluate TV shows? aSe single episodes submitted for consideration like is done with the Emmy's or do they evaluate seasons as a whole?

1981 was also a dubious year for Best Picture:
Atlantic City
Chariots of Fire
On Golden Pond
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Reds

We saw Up In The Air this weekend. All rave reviews were right on. Clooney's best role IMO.

Probably the same way they "evaluate" movies - based on who throws them the best party right before the voting begins. (Seriously - that's how Pia Zadora won a Golden Globe (and if this is on YouTube anywhere, see if you can hear some audience members laughing and at least one call out, "Fix!", as has been reported), not particularly coincidentally followed by the awards not being on network TV for the next 25 years or so.)

Seriously, these are press agents - they probably just watch the shows when they're broadcast and throw in a few other factors. (Some people believe that Ugly Betty's wins in its first season were based on the fact that a considerable number of HPFA members have a similar show in their own countries.) TV Golden Globes aren't nearly as important as the movie ones, almost certainly because the awards used to come out during the Oscars nominating period (and they may still do, now that the Oscars have been moved to March). Of course, try telling Leonardo DiCaprio (Golden Globe winner and Oscar non-nominee for Titanic) that.

A far better example is Jim Carrey, who was the self-proclaimed "Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes". He won back-to-back Globes for The Truman Show and Man On the Moon, but couldn't even get nominated for the Oscar. In the case of his performance in Man On the Moon, he was borderline-worthy of the Oscar itself, let alone a nomination.

I thought the worst part of the technical production was that they couldn't filter out all the background noise in the auditorium when people were speaking at the microphone. Several times it was difficult to hear the presenter over the crowd, who mostly seemed not to care what was going on up on the stage.

As for the time thing, what's the point of having famous people as presenters if all they're going to do is walk to the mic and say, "The nominees for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical or Comedy are:" If they're so pressed for time that the presenters don't even get to banter for a few seconds before announcing their nominees/winners, then they might as well go back to the press conference announcement rather than the awards ceremony.
I have to ask those that watch it.... Is Mad Men really that great of a show that it beat out the likes of Dexter, House & True Blood??
Haven't watched this season of Dexter yet, and I don't watch True Blood, but Mad Men is vastly superior to House. I'm not even sure how House got nominated. I think the only reason it did get nominated is because it's the Hollywood Foreign Press and Hugh Laurie is a Brit having success in Hollywood.
