TiVo HD: I Could Really Use Your Help

In a nutshell, I will be moving in the next couple of weeks, and would like to buy my first TiVo ever.

Currently, I'm using the Motorola QIP6416, and prior to that, I've used several other Motorola boxes. I've never cared much for any of them, and had planned to explore TiVo several years back, but never did. I would like to replace one of my Motorola boxes with a TiVo HD unit, and perhaps eventually replace them all with TiVo units, when I get things in order.

I'm completely out of the loop as far as TiVo information is concerned, so I'd truly appreciate if you guys could help me understand anything I need to know before replacing my HD-DVR. Recently I noticed that some of the TiVo HD units are priced in the $220-$250 range. Would these units be a nice replacement for the HD-DVR I'm renting every month? Also, if I recall correctly, you used to be able to pay a monthly fee, or an "all at once" option for the TiVo services. Do these two options still exist?

If I decide to buy a TiVo now, I'd like to hurry up and do so before I move, and the new service is installed.

So many questions, but first I'd love to hear what you guys have to say about this. Thanks.

I've used plenty of Motorola DVRs over the years and, believe me, they don't hold a candle to the experience you will get with a TiVo. It's not just that TiVos are better DVRs, but the current generation of TiVos have evolved into something so much more. They are basically your gateway to a world of entertainment options including YouTube, Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon, Rhapsody ... the list goes on and on. As the previous poster already pointed out, there is a wealth of information in the FAQ. Definitely check it out, and good luck! :)

Thanks guys. I appreciate the response. That link is great, and I'm sure I should've found it before I made this thread. I've just been so busy lately getting ready to move, and I'm trying to get so many things done in a short amount of time. I'm reading that FAQ right now!
