When the same program is on at the same time, one on an HD channel, and one on an SD (standard definition) channel, why is it that the default recording on Wish List programs is standard definition?
I'm running a Series 3 with Comcast. How can I change the default Wish List recording to HD when there's a conflict? Or, is there a work-around to force or fool the DVR to record the HD option? I was thinking maybe removing the SD channel from my lineup. Thoughts?

There is a HD wishlist category. It is not reliable, unfortunately.

I have removed all SD channels that I have an HD alternate for from my lineup. So far it's worked well.

Thanks guys. I'll just remove the redundant SD channels. Seems like a simple fix.

I think it's more like several dozen simple fixes... It's the kind of thing a computer could do really easily... ;-)

I agree, it would be nice if there were a setting in preferences. BUT, in the absence of that, removing the SD channels works well.

Researching "issues" with various DVR's before I buy/lease. Coming from era where you specified channel/time to record on VHS, it did not occur to me that the TIVO "benefit" of just selecting a program to watch could create a problem (default to SD channel recording if program available on both SD and HD channel).
Does TIVO allow specifying channel/time to force TIVO to record HD version or does TIVO only allow selecting a show (and then it decides whether to record SD or HD channel)? For various illogical reasons I want to keep both SD and HD channel selections for shows that air in both SD and HD.

Recording by Time and Channel is possible, and is one of the ways recommended to deal with this issue. If the show changes time or day of week, you will have to update the time/channel recording manually.

If you use the Season Pass you can direct the Tivo to only record from the HD channel. There are filter options with the Wishlists if your preference is the HD version over the SD.
