Good episode, though "slack tide" was an appropriate name. Felt like this one was about setting up the final act.
So Dexter killed an innocent man... seemed like he was almost like an addict who had gone too long without a "fix", he got sloppy and didn't follow his usual rigorous standards. Wonder how that will affect the rest.
I liked that the Quinn subplot seemed to resurface again.

Not guilty of murder, but hardly an innocent man in the general sense. I think many people would have no problem rationalizing after the fact that it wasn't so bad. Dexter, on the other hand, maybe not so much.
A good episode. I can't decide who will be going in the casket. It seems like Trinity may be planning to off himself, but who knows...

I liked this one too. Dexter kills an "innocent", Quinn sticks his nose in, not sure what Trinity is up to. Should be a good final 5.

I think this show has started to go unreal with the story lines. First how does Dexter who has a wife, three kids, a house and a job find time to spend weekends helping Trinity and also driving around at nite stalking his victims? Same for tonite. He takes the kids camping takes off after they are asleep, kills a guy, cleans up, dumps the body and returns to the camp site wide eyeed and bushy tailed after being up all nite.

Did you miss the beginning of the season? Where his marriage nearly fell apart because he was gone all the time and never did anything with his family?
As for the time aspect of the night kill, it's always stretched believability IMO that he can set up his crime scene, clean up, get rid of the body and get home in time. Nothing new there this episode. I have just come to accept it.

Deb got the Apartment. So it stays in the family and they don't have to mess with the opening.

Assuming Dexter sleeps there regularly, makes orange juice, coffee, and shaves there.

Well, by now he has it down to a well-rehearsed routine, so that would speed things up considerably.
But you do have to suspend some level of disbelief in order to like a bloody murderer such as our pal Dex.

If the photographer wasn't the killer, what would merit killing him? That he's a douchbag who takes pictures of women that might be considered degrading? That's hardly enough to justify Dexter's code. Wasn't there an episode early on where he would only kill a pedophile if it was apparent that he's also a killer?
The photographer may have an alibi for one murder, but there were other girls missing and I'm pretty sure we'll find out that he was involved in the other's fate.
Unless the theme of the next season is going to be one of remorse over killing a truly innocent person.

Miguel Prado's (S3) brother was also an "innocent" kill.

Dexter jumped into the killing of the photographer too soon. I was thinking it could have been anyone associated with the studio, like the assistant, that could have killed the woman.

Did they explain that as we found out the younger brother was involved in something, or that it was self-defense...? I can't remember.

Yeah, especially when he was locking up and the last to leave the studio. You would have thought Dex would have dug a bit deeper. He's getting sloppy!

Somehow I think Trinity's project is meant for Dexter. He knows something.

Both. He was a dirty cop, and he surprised and attacked Dexter when Dexter was trying to kidnap his next victim.

I really hope they don't wuss out and have the photographer be guilty of murdering one of the other models, or be involved, somehow, in the death of the final model.
I would rather see how Dexter deals with having killed a 'true' innocent.

Nothing would merit murder. My point was simply that the guy was a scumbag who took advantage of illegal immigrants and did everything in his power to set back gender equality by 50 years and promote domestic violence. It could be a lot worse. And as I said, I didn't think Dexter would see it that way because he doesn't operate that way.

I agree. As mentioned, we've seen him targeting criminals before, but he always only allows himself to actually kill murderers. This was an "innocent" in Dexter's eyes.

Saw that coming a mile away.
Dexter usually has mountains of evidence to avoid this type of thing. Was shocked he didn't wait for DNA evidence at least.
Plus, the whole "leave the campsite and go and kill someone" thing was stupid. If Cody woke up (it was his first campout) or one of the other fathers was looking for him then found the boat gone, it would have been a disaster.
I don't know if they had new writers, but it just didn't seem like a regular "Dexter". I predict the "innocent kill" was shoehorned in there to fit in with some other plot element... much like the whole Trinity/family thing have fit way too well together.

I am surprised that no one floated the theory that the loyal assistant is the one doing the body dumps for the photographer. Or they are a kill team. The assistant kills them after the photographer is done with them, wouldn't want anyone to be able to recreate his "art."

I am not surprised, because that was not the point of this sub plot.

I agree. I keep thinking back to when Dex met that young kid and could see in his eyes what he was. I think Trinity knows about Dexter and is trying to test him and see how far along he is.

Why? He could just say he couldn't sleep because he was stressed from work, and went out for a boat ride knowing the other parent(s) had it covered.

I liked this episode. It showed that as much as he thinks he is alone and inhuman, Dexter is as human as any of us and can make mistakes. I saw the assistant angle almost immediately. And like most of us thought; Deb did take over Dexter's old apt.
Best line of the episode: "What did I like to do when I was 12? Okay, moving on..."
I think it's a shame that the dropped the angle from the books about the kids having their own dark passengers and Dexter trying to teach them like Harry taught Dexter.
Glad to see Deb's hunt for Harry's CI come to an end. I never understood the purpose of that plotline.

Who is to say down the road they won't go into that side story from the book?

They might, but I think there would be some hints already if they were planning on doing that.

For those that have read the books. Are they using anything from the book any longer or has that run it's course, and now the writers on the show are writing the plots?

The 1st season was based loosely on the first book. But there were many changes. After that the series went on its own path and has nothing to do with the rest of the books. Much to my dismay (well not about the 3rd book which was way out there).

I suspected as much. The first season was by far the best. It's still really good, but it doesn't have the pace of the first season.

But in the books it was Cody who had the dark passenger and Astor appears to harbor similar tendencies.
