My S2 TiVo failed for the 3rd time (have had it since 2002). I also used the Weaknees mod to upgrade it to use two drives, so I have some experience with the old version of MFSTools Boot CD.

First of all, I swear I have read the MFSTools thread and other Series 2 related threads, and I'm just a bit unsure about what I am supposed to do.

I want to replace my drives and make sure that I can use the entire 500GB of the new IDE drive that I ordered. However, the backup image that I do have is a very old image, and I suspect that it doesn't support partitions larger than 137GB. I think my old drive(s) are dead, I don't care about saving anything -- all I want is my TiVo to work again.

So if my current image is too old, then this is ugly, but maybe it would work:
1. Use MFSTools to re-install my old image onto the 500GB drive. It will only see 137GB of it though, due to the old image.
2. Put the drive into my TiVo box and update the SW all the way up to the latest version, which, I hope does support LBA48.
3. Now take the drive OUT of the TiVo and use MFSTools to save that image.
4. Now that the image is saved, reinstall that image onto the 500GB hard drive but this time it will see all 500GB. Now TiVo will see the entire 500GB, because the image supports LBA48.

Alternatively, I can:
Dig up an image somewhere with the latest image and install it directly.

Are these my choices? Or is there a quick and dirty way I can set up the new drive (using the copykern command? I'm not exactly sure if that will do what I want it to do).

Hello pchou and welcome to the TiVo Community.

Your plan is good.

- Install the old image to the drive without expanding (don't use the -x in mfsrestore)
- put the drive in the TiVo
- Force the connection to the TiVo service to update the software toversion 6.X or later of the TiVo OS.
- Then with the drive back in the PC expand the drive using mfsadd -x
- and make a new backup.

No need to copykern (won't work with a stand- alone Series 2 anyway)
You should download a new version of MFSTools I suggest using MFSLive form http://mfslive.com

Im sure you really wanted to post this in the Underground -> Upgrade section maybe the modarators could move this thread to there.

You can buy an image from Instant Cake for $20. End result is the same.

Avoids a bit of extra work of using MFS, forcing connections, waiting for updates, pulling drive, using MFS again. etc. etc.

Just download IC as an .iso file, burn to CD and install.
