Netflix crashes my Tivo-HD (GSOD)

I am trying Netflix out mainly for the instant streaming option. Every other attempt to watch Netflix end up with the Gray Screen Of Death, often taking two reboots to recover.

Is this common?

Nope. Total freezing to the point of having the pull the power plug is apparently common though.
