Specifacally lets say I have 3 season pass programs that all air at the same time on a given day, as I understand it the tivo will schedule the first two and not the third. If subsequently I cancel one of the two originally recorded will the unit at some point insert the 3rd priority show on its own ?.

If you cancel one of the first two shows, you should see the third appear in 5-30 seconds. Wishlist results may take a little longer to update (i.e. a few minutes). You may or may not need to page up/down and then back to see the updated schedule.
Note if the third program is showing again at a later time and/or date, the TiVo will schedule the recording at that time. The TiVo continues to look for reairings of conflicting programs for 28 days. That's why you should always put ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC shows at the top of Season Pass Manager and cable shows which repeat at the bottom; the TiVo can always find and record the re-airings of cable shows, but local network shows rarely repeat.

Unless they are on PBS! Or, season premieres!

5-30 seconds? NO WAY. 5-10 minutes... maybe..

For me, season pass changes update that fast. I have around 60 season passes.
The To Do List doesn't always refresh the current page, so I find that I must exit and then return to the To Do List, or page down once or twice and then page back up. Try it.
Wishlists programs do take longer to appear. I've seen wishlist programs (for movies, pilots, sports teams) take anywhere from 60s to 10 minutes to show up on the To Do List when I cancel another program.

I wonder if the to-do list is updated in stages... I think I've seen it where the upcoming shows are processed and shown correctly, but certain cancellations of SPs or rearrangements farther down haven't shown up correctly.
That could explain both a 5-30 seconds findings and several minutes. I usually wait much longer before figuring the To-do list is accurate!
And even then, it generally still shows expected recordings from a previous channel line-up... those sometimes don't seem to vanish until the schedule has "run out".

If you re-prioritize, cancel, or ad a season pass, the update takes place very quickly. If you cancel a recording, it could take hours before the Tivo does it's own rescheduling and finds the new program to record.

The way I handle season passes is this:
1. network TV
2. cable networks
Generally network TV doesn't run a prime time show over again.
Cable TV networks run their shows over again.
If you have three shows you want to record at the same time my guess is network TV isn't all three of them.
Adjust your season passes accordingly.

Yeah, that's how I was interpreting the original question -- deleting an individual recording.. not deleting a whole season pass. (Though even in that case, I usually will make sure to manually record things 'tonight' if I'm not going to be home by when they will record.)
I'm much less sure of this, but it seems to me like clipping doesn't update often -- e.g. if I have a show that will be clipped, and the show that causes the clipping goes away (I delete it, the schedule changes and the guide data is updated), the show won't have the clipping removed.
