I have a S1 with a lifetime sub that I replaced the drive to a larger one a few years ago(dont recall the ver. of the image) and now my S2 is stuck on "Almost there..." . I've tried the 52,57,etc,but all it des is keeps re-booting a few times when I try it. I wanted to pull the drive out of the S2(I'm figuring that is what is wrong) and replace it with a larger drive, but the only image I have is the one from 2004 or the one that I can pull from the S1. Can I do this or do I need a S2 image? Both are Tivo brand single tuners. Thanks for the help.

Physically, the drive will work, but yes, you need an S2 image that is appropriate for your S2 model.

To get an image check Instant Cake. The cost is $20.

You might be able to use your 2004 image. It should update once you connect to the tivo servers.

The only problem might be if your internet adapter isn't supported with the old software. Worse case scenario use dialup until your software gets updated.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I need an S2 image . When I did the S1 I think I had to use the phone until it updated than I was able to use the wireless.

Install your 2004 image. System information will tell you what sofware version you have. Check your adapter against the link. You may need to disable encryption so you can use your wireless adapter to update your software. You may even need to use dialup first.

Pull your drive and backup after your software updates.

Not sure what I did wrong, but it was something :/ First I need to put a pc together with IDE cables. Set Pri Mas as XP, installed a new HD(for Tivo) as Pri Slave and cd rom as Sec Mas. Booted with the Linux cd ,than typed in the following. It said it was installing and after it was done I un-mounted the drive and put it in the Tivo. It wont go pass the Welcome! powering up screen...So I guess I did something wrong. Also,I installed my image that I had saved on a cd to the Pri Mas...Which was an series 1 image.
Thanks again for the help.

mkdir /mnt/dos

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

mfsrestore -r 4 -s 127 -bzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb
