I just got Verizon Fios and they setup the wireless network and the guy suggested that I leave it the way they set it up. Right now the SSID and the WEP are random numbers and letters. I usually make it a little more secure than just WEP and I would like my own SSID. Anyone think there is a problem with changing the Verizon settings?

As is though I have a problem with all my TiVo boxes. In the now playing list none of the other boxes show up, but all other networking works (netflix, photos, games, etc). The only way I can see my other TiVo boxes is when I boot up my laptop (running pytivo). I not only see the laptop, but I also see the other TiVo boxes. Anyone ever see this before?

edit: hmmm I just posted and realized maybe this should have gone in the help section

If you're comfortable doing it, there is no reason not too. The only thing that can come up is if you have to troubleshoot a network connection issue they'll have you reset the router back to defaults, and then you'd have to set it up all over again, but that's the same as with any router.

I was told the same thing at installation, but I changed my Fios settings (SSID and security encryption). Switched to a custom SSID and changed to the better and more secure WPA (instead of WEP).

I've had no issues!

Oh and in regards to this I think you should read this thread, your issue sounded familiar to me and I think this thread is on point:

The Verizon guy is probably just trying to discourage naive users from turning off WEP altogether.

There should be no issues as I have changed mine as well.

If the tech did not give you the info to login in the default userid is admin and the default password is password1

The default ip should be 192.168.1.1

When I added TV to my FiOS I had the router changed from the prior dlink and had to reboot all my devices as the IP scheme changed from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x.

For any TiVo not able to see something, try to reboot each if you have not done so already.

A FiOS tech told me early versions of Vista had issues with WPA. I don't know if that's true but I was told that's the reason they didn't use WPA.

I had connection problems with a laptop. FiOS replaced my router, and changed my security back to WEP (I had changed it) I'm not sure which solved the problem. One of the Vista SPs was supposed to solve the problem. One of these days I'll take the time to change everything to WPA.

My wireless range doesn't really go past my property line. I'm not concerned.

I went in and changed the settings to what I had on my old router and whatever I changed it to corrected the problem. All the boxes see each other without having the laptop on.

Thanks again
