Yeah, that would suck.
The #1 rule of TAR has to be: know where your passport is at all times. That should be a standard check before you leave any place, make sure both team members have their passports.

No they didn't. If the cameraman had noticed it they would have showed it.
Wow, that was tough! I think nearly everyone was rooting for them.
I know people seem to dislike the poker girls and I have a feeling their days are numbered but there are a few teams I'd love to see go out first beginning with the musclehead that did the strange kick when they reached the mat.

Not in the show, but they tell how they lost it in the Elimination Station video on cbs.com . They basically went into the temple where the monkey roadblock was held when they weren't supposed to, it was dark inside, and they reached into their pockets to pull out their headlights and that's when the passport fell out and they didn't notice. I bet the film crew wasn't allowed to film inside the temple; that's why it wasn't on camera. Someone found it and returned it to the US embassy.

I was rooting for them as I thought they were the most endearing team. Two things made it worse - 1, they would have won the leg (and probably a nice trip) and two, it would have been my least favorite team that was eliminated (lying, cheating poker girls!).

I was rooting for them, too, but I think maybe there was just no prize on this leg. Phil didn't tell them when they checked in that they needed to find their documents... he didn't even seem to know until they went up and told him after they'd been standing around in the backstage-type area looking for it. And I don't think that production would have alerted him about it because if they'd known they lost the passports, we surely would have gotten a zoom in shot of the passport lying on the floor of the cab or something.

I think it started at 8:40, so there was about 10 minutes left. Not much happened... the guys called up Thierry the cabby buddy (apparantly he'd given them his business card or something for some reason) and headed back out to try to find the passports and the last couple teams finished up the monkey task and checked in.

Yes, a couple seasons ago. I can't remember their names, but it was a mom & son team. For the detour they split the two members of the team up. While they were split, the son left his bag--which had all their money and their passports--in a cab. Phil had to come meet them out on the race, because they didn't even have enough money to make it to the pit stop.

Couldn't have happened to a better couple! His attitude was awful, just a piece of paper... who needs it? I believe an all too typical attitude. Folks, you are in a foreign country. That piece of paper is all you have to demonstrate some standing rather than just being another illegal immigrant. I didn't say that it led to an elimination necessarily, but that in recent seasons people seem to have been more careless with their bags and left them places. At a challenge, in a cab, etc. Usually they are able to find them ebfore they are the last team checked in.

I wonder if the producers make them show their documents after they check in at the mat.
I always suspected (but felt more confident last night) that once they check in, etc., they have to show that they still have whatever is required for the race - at a minimum, their passports, but with some going back to find clues they lost, I wondered if they are required to have them at the finish as well. It's just never come up that someone got to the pit stop and didn't have them wthout already realizing it before then.
Was anyone else confused about the fact that, if I remember right, when they finished the last leg it was light out and they were leaving on this leg around 7:00 p.m., give or take. That would seem like something over a 24 hour pit stop, but then they all start out and immediately there is about a 12 hour "bunch up" until the plane leaves? I must be missing something obvious, but that all seemed pretty strange to me.

It was one of those pit stops where the departure times were arbitrary and had nothing to do with the check in times. You can always tell when these exist by the way Phil phrases the voiceover, i.e. "Flight Time and Big Easy, who were the first to arrive, will depart at 6:53 p.m." vs. "Flight Time and Big Easy, who were the first to arrive at 3:37 p.m., will depart at 3:37 a.m."
It is strange that they had them all leave the pit stop, only to go sleep on the floor at the airport. Since it wasn't a 12-hour pit stop, and the producers obviously knew the next flight wasn't until 12:25 p.m., why didn't they keep them at the pit stop until at least midnight or even 3-4 a.m.?

Exactly. I wasn't born either, but it's hard for me to fathom people (especially that many people) not knowing who she is.
I don't know, while some of the responses were stupid, not recognizing her I don't think is a big deal. I wouldn't exactly bet I could recognize a picture of her myself, especially as out of context as that was. Of course, I could also care less about the Kennedy's in general, so that's probably part of the reason :). And for a lot of the people in this show, it's quite frankly ancient history.
Now, I have to admit, when the first team had a cab driver that immediately recognized it, I thought they were incredibly lucky. Then it seemed like just about anyone on the street recognized it, so I was quite impressed with how the average person just knew about it.

Was that in response to my post? If so, you're wrong. I went back specifically and listened to make sure that this was one of the pit stops where the time they left had nothing to do with the time they arrived. Phil did not say what time they arrived, only what time they were departing, which indicates that it wasn't an even 12/36 hours and was therefore some arbitrary time selected by the producers.

Interesting that they showed a Western tourist taking a photo of the TAR cameraman while the father and son were at the Russian Market.
TAR usually does a good job of keeping tourists out of the shots and videotaping only locals (and, sometimes, expats) watching the challenges being performed. I sometimes imagine that the cameramen must yell in advance, "All tourists, get out of the way!"
(The two Pennsylvania women women seemed like expats who knew the city since the basketball players also took them along to the monkey challenge after finishing at the Russian Market.)

I can't really add much to what has been said.
I hated to see Zev and Justin go, especially when they ran such a good leg and would have come in first otherwise. That just sucked. :(
And the whole Jackie O sequence was indeed quite sad. It's one thing not to recognize her (although c'mon - she's one of the most photographed women of the 20th century!) -- but to look at a photo of her and think she looks Cambodian? That was both odd and sad.
It doesn't surprise me that one or two younger (and dumber) teams wouldn't recognize her, but the fact that most of the teams didn't seem to recognize her was pretty sad. Who recognized her other than Pinky's dad? I know at least one other team did, but I can't remember who.
Would you have recognized a picture of Eleanor Roosevelt taken in a foreign country when you were in your early 20's?
Yeah, I think I would have. I think I learned about Eleanor Roosevelt in fourth or fifth grade and would have recognized her then. And she died long before I was born. That's not really an excuse.

When the two made their way to the US consulate in Cambodia to report it missing, they were happy to find out that it had been turned in but upset to discover that they lost it at a dark temple near the location for the monkey challenge.
"It was exactly where we would have guessed it was. It just makes it that much tougher. Now that we know where it was, we think we know what happened and it's harder to swallow," says Justin.
"We went into this temple we weren't supposed to go into because we misread the clue," he explains.
"I pull out the light and it probably came out with the light. If we hadn't gone inside that temple, we hadn't needed to search around in the dark and pull out my headlight, we'd probably be wherever everybody else is right now."
"Sick to my stomach. Now I'm pretty sure that it's my fault. Makes me beat myself up a little more than I was already."

Shoulda been clearer. I was talking about how Justin & Zev got there 1st. Still seem like (in the editing at least) that Sam & Dan had it pretty big head start.
Like everyone else, I'm very bummed at how this ended - especially since my 9-year old son has Asperger's and it is neat to see a young man able to handle the challenges that come with the race. I was especially touched by how well they handled it - they were obviously increibly disappointed, but there was no yelling or finger pointing - I can only imagine what would have happened if that had been Lance's team that lost a passport.
I do have to say, it is getting pretty easy to identify which team will be eliminated near the start of the episode - if they give a team a bit more clip time to discuss their relationship or background, that team is pretty much toast.

People interviewed Zev and Justin (http://tvwatch.people.com/2009/10/13/zev-and-justin-we-thought-we-could-beat-anyone/) about the passport incident and other stuff.
Walk readers through what happened after elimination. Did you ever find the passport?
Justin: We went across the street to the embassy and someone had turned it in. When they told us where it was [found], we realized what happened. I had the passport in my fanny pack when we went to the monkey dance place. They didn’t show it but at first we had gone incorrectly inside the monastery. It was really dark so I pulled out my headlight from the pack and the passport must have come out with it.
Zev: We were stuck in Cambodia for about four days because this happened on Friday and the embassy was closed on weekends. We were depressed the whole time.
They say they pretty much got along with everyone else, even Lance, but not the poker players so much.

The #1 rule of TAR has to be: know where your passport is at all times. That should be a standard check before you leave any place, make sure both team members have their passports.

For regular travel, no. The only way you can know where your passport is at all times is to have it on you. When you're doing regular travel it's a bad idea to have your passport on you in case you get mugged and it gets stolen. I travel outside the US all the time and I never carry my passport with me. Before you ask, no I've never been mugged, but a buddy of mine did get his pocket picked in Barcelona a couple of years ago. They got all his cash, all his credit cards, and all his ideas except his passport. It was in his hotel room.

In some countries, you are theoretically supposed to have it on your person at all times. I'm told that some people have been hassled when they don't have them when asked by the local police.
I'm with you, I usually leave it in the hotel room safe and carry a photocopy with me. But sometimes the hotel room doesn't have a safe, and I think the chances of stuff getting stolen from the room may be higher than getting mugged. I've had things stolen from a hotel room (twice) more than I've been mugged (never). And if you carry it in a moneybelt, it's hard for muggers to get it.
In this case, apparently Zev and Justin carried them in the official TAR packs and it fell out, but they were in the dark and didn't see it. I think most of the teams carry them in their TAR packs - maybe they are even instructed to carry them in their TAR bags -- but I would want to carry mine in a moneybelt. It's too easy to drop things out of bags.

They got all his cash, all his credit cards, and all his ideas except his passport. That is one hell of a pickpocket! Your friend shouldn't have been so open minded. ;)

Why was there no first place prize?? Did they just get rid of it because of the passport screwup?

They edited it out. Zev and Justin won motorcycles, but they rejected them for some reason:

That's interesting that they said they rejected the prize. I'm guessing that when it became apparent that they weren't eligible for the prize, by not having their passports when they checked in, then the prize was rescinded.
That interview said they only had about 26 minutes to look for the passport before the last place team checked in and they were notified that it was too late. I wonder how much of that 26 minutes was taken up by them dumping the contents of their bags all over the grounds. That looked like a not-very effective way of searching.
That interview also said that they were surprised how much downtime there was. It said that there were only a few hours per day of racing and the rest was interviews and sitting around. Very interesting.

I could easily imagine a person rejecting an unwanted prize because they don't want the 1099 for it and the hassle of selling the thing.

Initially surprised but after I thought about it I'm not sure my kids would know her by that picture.
Would you have recognized a picture of Eleanor Roosevelt taken in a foreign country when you were in your early 20's?
Regardless, I thought the comments were pretty funny.
Totally agree with this. I couldn't pick some first ladies out of a lineup if my life depended on it. I realize that Jackie O is a bit different but most of the racers are pretty young.

Yes, due to going to Catholic grammar and high school, where there was an emphasis on history.

I pad TAR by an hour and it usually does the trick...
Wouldn't have done it this past week....NFL went into OT. I added another 30 minutes during the game to catch all of TAR.
