My Tivo HD unit froze yesterday, would like to hear thoughts on this:

With the unit purring along just fine, I decided to navigate the Tivo menu to the Tuner Diagnostic selection, to see how long the unit has been running since my last reboot.

When i clicked on the selection, Tivo displayed a clock, said please wait, and never came back (after 20 min I pulled the plug).

The unit was not locked up, it responded to remote commands, just gave the 'rejected' sound you hear when you go to the end of a menu.

The unit was recording a show, and I was able to see the unit from another unit in the network.

After reboot, and normal operation was resumed, I repeated the click stream to view diagnostics and It immediatly displayed data for both tuners.

Was the fact that one of the tuners was engaged recording a show the reason I got locked into a time out?

I've seen similar "lockup's" with our Series3 and TiVo HD once in a very long while over the years. Had to pull the plug to get things back to normal. It's hard to say what causes it. TiVo can be doing quite a bit of work in the foreground and background and now and then a "perfect storm" may occur. IIRC others have reported similar problems, but most often when a broadband connection is involved...downloading a program, accessing some service, etc. or TiVo might be updating the program guide or some other housekeeping task. Usually the problem can be attributed to a network or server issue. Since everything basically goes through the hard drive it may be a matter of I/O error correction failing. It happens. TiVo is a computer and computers aren't immune to programs freezing.

If it's the first time you've experienced it I wouldn't be concerned. If something like that begins happening more and more often it would be likely that the hard drive is beginning to fail. But once? Shrug your shoulders, sit back, relax and watch a good television program. ;)

I had a similar lockup during a visit to the diagnostics screen. I pulled the plug after about a half hour.
I think richsadams has a good point, I think my Tivo had just done it's daily download and was probably organizing things at the exact time I accessed diag. Just bad luck on my part, later I checked out my download time and found out it was right before me initiating diagnostics.
This is the first time I've needed to pull the plug since I bought my Tivo HD maybe 6 months ago. Well second if you count when I upgraded my HDD to 1TB within the first month;) One lockup in 6 months, probably due to bad timing on my part, can't get better than that:)
