Is it possible to transfer my stored shows from my series 2 DT Tivo to the TivoHD that I'm getting to replace it... without signing up for two service agreements?
Thanks, David

Keep the Series 2 subbed long enough to copy everything to your computer using TiVo Desktop. Then switch the sub to the HD and copy them back.

You don't actually need to use the TiVo Desktop to do the transfer. You can do a direct transfer FROM Series2TO Series3 to over your network (you just can't go the other way...)

Why can't you go the other way? I had a post a couple of weeks ago that no one could address. I can transfer programs from a series 2 to an HD machine (which is in the series 3 line but not specifically THE series 3 model), however, I can't transfer the other way. No one can tell me why not or whether I should be able to do so or not.

You can transfer from a Series3/THD to a Series2 as long as:
- the content is not copy-protected
- it's not HD content
- you don't have a tuning adapter (TA)

This feature has stopped working for some of us with an S3 and S2 on the same account.

Do you have a tuning adapter? I think I've read people having problems with those preventing MRV. I have no TAs and I can transfer between my S2 and my S3 and THD without any problem (barring the criteria I described above).

I have no cable cards in the HD unit, thus, no tuning adapter. No programming is being recorded in HD but in cable on both the S2 and the HD machines.

So are the shows copy-protected?

You are correct; the MRV for some of us stopped working between the S3 and S2 after the TA was introduced.
So your initial assessment was correct.

But if I'm not using a TA or a cable card and I'm not recording in HD, then what in the workings of the software or the machine is preventing bi-directional transfers of programs between my S2 and HD units? I'm not comprehending this.

It sounds like, from your other thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=435275), that the S3 is having issues retrieving the Program Details when you select a show in the remote NPL (you said you just get the loopset background and nothing else).
You said you've rebooted the THD when that happens, to get out of the loopset, but have you rebooted both TiVos? Can you access the S2's NPL through your browser (https://your S2 IP address)?

I don't know how to access any player through the Now Playing List online. I do know that my machines are properly listed on TiVo's Website as having been properly set up for transfers to/from each other.

I gave you the instructions in my post. Open your browser and point it at https://{TiVo IP address} then login with a username of 'tivo' and your MAK as the password.

What is a MAK? I have no idea what the I.P. address of any of my TiVos is. That information is likely embedded in my wireless router, which, if I'm not mistaken, searches for a different route each time it connects with TiVo's server.

You can find the IP address of your TiVo on the network information screen under Messages & Settings -> Settings -> Phone & Network. Your MAK is your media access key, which can be found under Messages & Settings -> Account & System Information -> Media Access Key.

Ok, I found the MAK address. Now, your instructions are:
Open your browser and point it at https://{TiVo IP address} then login with a username of 'tivo' and your MAK as the password.
What is the TiVo IP address that I type into the brackets? In fact, do I type the brackets as well?
windracer

No, don't type the brackets. Follow the instructions in my previous post to find the IP address of your TiVo on the Network Information screen. Then open your browser and type in:
https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
For example, one of my TiVos is at:
https://192.168.1.76
You'll be prompted for a username and password. Type in 'tivo' (without the quotes) in the username field, and your MAK (all numbers) in the password field. Click OK and you should see the Now Playing List of your TiVo in the browser.

Thanks, but I'm sorry, I don't know where to find my TiVo's I.P. address. I suppose that's not the same thing as the MAK, is it? If not, where do I locate it? Please tell me specific detailed instructions. I'm not too computer savvy.

I told you exactly how to find the IP address a few posts above:
You can find the IP address of your TiVo on the network information screen under Messages & Settings -> Settings -> Phone & Network.

Well, when I typed in the I.P. address I merely got a congratulations message. No where on that page was a place to type my MAK nor the word TiVo. Hmm. Thanks for your help.

You're typing 'http' instead of 'https' but you're getting closer! ;)

I typed it correctly this time, but after entering the info., I retested the transfer and I still got the blue screen on the Series 2 machine. Someone in another thread said there is a "known issue" that S3 to S2 transfers was not possible after the invention of tuning adapters for TiVo. Could this be the reason I can't get transfers to work from S3-S2 but only from S2-S3?

You said you didn't have a tuning adapter, so do you or don't you? Yes, some people have problems with MRV after installing a TA.
So did you try to download the recording from the web interface?
SpiritualPoet

I do not have a tuning adapter. The way the comment was made was when the tuning adapter technology was adapted the problem came about. I thought perhaps the S3 machines had been reconfigured from the standpoint of manufacuring that enables the problem to exist. I don't know what you meant about downloading from the Internet. All I'm trying to do is to transfer a program from my Series 2 into my Series 3 using the type G adapters from TiVo. I had no problem transferring from one Series 2 to another Series 2 but when one of those machines was substituted for a Series 3 (HD unit), that's when transfer problems began. I'm in no way trying to download a program from Netflix nor Amazon - that is not involved here. Remember that I can transfer from the Series 2 to the Series 3 but not the other way around. I don't know why. Do you?

I didn't mean download from the internet ... I meant you can download recordings through your browser by accessing the Now Playing List via the instructions we went back and forth on earlier. I realize this doesn't help your MRV issue, but you could presumably download recordings from your S3 using the browser (or TiVo Desktop) and then transfer them to the S2 via TiVo Desktop again.
I'm out of ideas at this point, sorry! I tried ...

Thanks, anyway. I made a 3rd call to TiVo customer service. The problem is now resolved thanks to a CSR providing me helpful information to resolve it.

I was told to disconnect the G adaptor. Then I was told to restart the TiVo (both of these steps are pertaining to the Series 2 machine). After the machine restarts, I reconnected the G adaptor. Then, I placed the G adaptor up higher above the television set to get a stronger signal, and initiated a transfer from the HD unit. It worked. The signal strength went from 65% to 70%+ (albeit it fluctuated at times).
