K- I have a basic series 3 tivo hd. A year and half ago my first Western digital 500 gig expander went kaput. I could not find my receipt and was out of luck. Then I got another one which just lasted for about a year. It was not totally dead- but it just before all the new shows- and I just decided scre w it; (it was slowly dying for sure)- Decent time to due a an upgrade and some fall cleaning. Wow- my family and I are filling it up- fast. I have mere days! lol- it has only been 3 days so far.It does only record 19 hd hours after all. This time- WD will send me a new one to use as backup for my laptop or whatever at least.

So time for my third external drive. Is a 1 tb as big as I can go for plug and play, (or something that does not void the warranty), with my tivo hd? I want to go as big as possble as safely as possible. Safety is more important. I need to know what to avoid in the future. it was defintely hot weather both times when the drives started to go bad. This time it just started to crash more and more. I watched as many shows as I really wanted and could and told my family to do the same. Saw maybe a third. My network is messed up so I didnt back up my shows. This will not be happening in the future. I basically want to know what to do to keep it running in tip top shape. How far away from a speaker should it be? how much room does it need on each side? anything else to keep it away from? Should I put a laptop fan under it? Any tips are greatly apppreciated.
This dummy at Best Buy convinced to me to buy a 1.5 TB Free agent seagate extreme today. That is- of course going back tomorrow. Is my only bet to Buy a 1 Tb Western Digital (sighhh) made for the tivo? Is a site like Amazon the best place to get it- or can I just get from best Buy? So I am reallllllly hoping to avoid any issues in the future. willing to put the drive wherever I have to in my home theatre area instead of just on the shelf. Again- thanks so much in advance. This site has always rocked. I know I will get good advice. Time is of the essence people!

Check out the Fantom 1TB external Green Drive. It's compatible with the S3 when used as external storage. They always seem to be on sale for about $80 after rebate. Just make sure you have one of the recommended eSATA cables and you'll be up and running in no time. Check out the sticky thread regarding external storage for the S3 Tivo/Tivo HD for more info.

I've got two S3's and each one has one of these drives attached and they work great. I had already upgraded the internal drives so I needed to pull the internal drive and install it in my PC to expand the partitions to include the external drive. I'm not sure if this is necessary if you have a stock drive in your S3. Just hook up the external drive and see if it's recognized. It should connect the same way your WD external drive did.

drblaze: The 500GB or 1TB Western Digital My DVR Expander is the only hard drive that will work via P&P with TiVo HD's (http://i44.tinypic.com/2nqy554.jpg) and TiVo HDXL's (http://i39.tinypic.com/10mmmja.jpg). You cannot use any other eSATA drive or go larger without pulling the internal drive and doing some upgrade work. (And if you're going to do that most folks just upgrade the internal hard drive on the TiVo HD.) If you're going to buy one, Best Buy is rarely ever a best buy unless something's on sale. Amazon has about the lowest price right now and an excellent return policy.

All the info you need can be found on the Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=5616160#post5616160):

I'm not sure if this is necessary if you have a stock drive in your S3. Just hook up the external drive and see if it's recognized. It should connect the same way your WD external drive did.Good recommendation. The Fantom 1TB Green external hard drive ($69.99 AR right now at MacMall (http://www.macmall.com/p/4927517?gclid=CKSwnffinp0CFRESawod8Qvp_Q&store=macmall&source=mwbgooglesearch&wt.srch=1&s_kwcid=TC%7C7679%7Cfantom+green+drive%7C%7CS%7C%7C360940833 2&wt.mc_id=mwbgooglesearch)) will work as a P&P eSATA drive with a stock TiVo Series3 (http://i36.tinypic.com/4lhmiq.jpg) (only...not w/TiVo HD or TiVo HDXL). It has to be "married" to anything else.

Happy upgrading!
