I have gone through your read me's and it didnt work for me. THis unit came with no drives at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Or maybe tell me what the best software is to get these 2 units ready to go in? I have InstantCake Phillips Tivo HDR112.ISO, it will go through the steps with no luck. It just sits there, on the booting screen. Im using the dban stuff to clean them right now. Maybe someone knows what Im doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Check the drive jumpers, make sure they are set to CS or single/master.

I have the master and slave set to master and slave. Are they suppose to be something else? Thank you.

Ok, I guess noone has ever ran into this.... How about this, does it have to be hook up to cable(or what ever) to get past the boot screen?

Hang on. Are you saying you have a TiVo with no drives and you are trying to install 2 drives into it using Instant Cake? I'm not sure IC supports a 2 drive installation. In any case, I would get the TiVo up and running with a single drive and add the second drive later. You say you have IC for a Philips HDR 112. Is that the make and model of your TiVo? If not, your version of IC may not work on your TiVo. Secondly, assuming you do have the right software, I would suggest a single drive installation, not a dual drive installation. On a Series II TiVo, a 1T drive (available for under $80) should be more than large enough.

Yes:)

It ask's me if I want to set up 1 or 2 drives.

In any case, I would get the TiVo up and running with a single drive and add the second drive later.

I have tried to set it up with both, or either drive.

Do you know what software Im suppose to have? I thought series 1. I got this software from another place. Other than the one that sells it. Thank you for your input.

What kind of drives are you using? The Series 1 TiVos are a lot pickier than later models, and it's almost impossible to find drives over 160GB that will work in them these days.

I have 2 Maxtor drives. They are models: 4G160J8, and 4R160L0

I ran a pair of 6Y160P0 Maxtors in a Sony Series 1 for several years and they don't look much different from yours. You might try another cable for grins - I switched to an ATA133 cable when I installed them.

I wanted to switch cables, but theres that 1 pin thats blocked ont he newer cables. And these older units dont have that pin pulled. I wasnt sure if it was ok for me to break it off?

I got past it, and got the drives to work. Now its asking me to call to activate service with them. What did I forget to do? Thank you.

Some of the Series 1 units built before a certain date can operate without a subscription in "VCR" mode by setting up manual recordings by date and time. You wouldn't have any guide data, though.

Later models will only buffer the 1/2 hour live video and you can't record at all. I think you would have to call customer service and give them your TiVo Service Number to determine the staus of your DVR.

Ok, so I need to see if there is a VCR mode in my menu. If there is then thats the way I need to use it, if I dont want a sub? Thanks for the reply!

It's not really a separate "mode". It just means that when you're trying to record programs, only the record by date and time option is the only way to do it.

The easiest way to figure out if it's a doorstop without a sub is to just press the Record button. If it won't record you need a sub.

Oh, ok. Well it will record, as it sits. I just cant use the guide off it. So thats good news then:) Thank you.!!!
