View Full Version : After Buffer fills up, video becomes jerky and response to remote commands lag

Hello,

Have had Tivo since the early days and have a S3 now with FIOS in Massachusetts. Everything was working fine until about 5 or 6 days ago when the picture started to get jerky. It would play for a second (audio and video) and then pause for a random amount of time (1 to 20 seconds) and then play another couple seconds of audio and video and then continue like this ad nauseum.

I tried hard rebooting and it would fix for a period of time. After doing this several times I realized that it would work fine until the buffer would fill up and then, to the minute, would then start the jerky viewing again.

Anyone else experienced such a thing? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may have a failing hard disk. Try running a "kickstart" 54 test to check out the drive (see http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-kickstart-codes.php for instructions), and if it passes run the kickstart 57 test to check the file system.

Good advice. As I understand it though, even passing kickstart 54 tests doesn't absolutely ensure you don't have a bad hard disk.

Sounds like your hard drive probably has a few years on it, so it would not be surprising if it's going bad.

See the Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=370784) sticky thread for options on replacing the drive that are usually much better deals than going through TiVo. The first post in this thread is an excellent, continually updated, instruction manual and reference source. Many people have replaced their internal drives with 1 TB units (157 hrs HD) for less than $100.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it. I will definitely look into the extra drive component.

I called Support and the guy had me disconnect my wireless antenna, that fixed it. Seemed kind of odd but so far so good.

Again, thanks for the help!

That sounds like a problem with wireless interference.

Is your SSID unique?

Are you on a quiet wireless channel?

Curious,

This was an odd one for me as I couldn't figure out why this would happen because of a wireless antenna. Yes, my SSID is unique and believe the channel is quiet. How would I check?
