Hi,

Sometime last year, I upgraded my 40Gb Tivo hard drive for a larger one:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=397283

Everything was working well, until we had the builders in and they were knocking down a wall downstairs, right underneath my Tivo. I didn't realise until it was too late, but the vibrations caused the hard drive to give up and stop working :(

I hadn't made a note of the max record times for the old (original 40Gb) drive (and I'm reluctant to put it back in, as I've shelved it - it's acting as my master backup).

When I did the backup using the command I wrote in the link above, I saw the following:

Source 39 Hours backup size: 31848 Mb

At the end, I saw that it said:
New standalone size: 130 hours (91 more).

I'm using a 120Gb hard drive and wondering if this sounds correct - because when I go into Tivo, system information, I see:

Recording capacity: 39 hrs, 53 min (Best Quality)
138 hrs, 45 min (Basic Quality)

Going into Preferences, I see:

Best Quality: 39hrs 53 min
High Quality: 64hrs 38 min
Medium Quality: 85hrs 37 min
Basic Quality: 138hrs 45 min

How does this compare with the standard 40Gb option - and does it sound right?

TivoWebPlus reports:

Space Summary
Total Space - 116036 MB 100.0% 104:07:23
Total Used 1 1056 MB 0.9% 0:24:46
Total Free - High - 114980 MB 99.1% 103:10:31
Deleted** 30 29163 MB 25.1% 26:08:23

I haven't used copykern, like I did last time. Do I need to?

Just making sure I've done everything right and that this sounds correct.

Cheers,
Matt

Yes, you should run still copykern even though you may not need the LBA48 kernel with a drive < 137GB,
as copykern also initialises the swapfile if you have set a larger than normal one ( the -s 300 bit).

If you don't initiliase the swapfile, then everything will work, but a daily call will fail unless forced immedately after bootup.

Your recording figures look correct though.

A standard 40GB is around 13hrs best, 39 hours basic.

Ah, that was my next question about the daily call - I was stuck with the "failed expanding data" message. And now I've gone and reset it - damn!

Right, back to the drawing board and try again!

Thanks - I'll let you know how I get on.

Interesting - thanks for that...

I took the hard drive that had failed and chanced it... Ran the backup/restore (shorter version) - it took about 15 mins in total and everything went well. I ran copykern and then checked the cachecard settings, performed 3 daily calls and it's all working fine. Just can't get the Highlights module to work properly without giving errors, but I can handle that - I've removed it for now.

Thanks again for your help, mikerr.

Cheers,
Matt
