We have had a TiVo HD unit for about two years without any real problems (aside from the nightmare of dealing with Comcast to set up the cablecards initially). However, it crashed and quit working two weeks ago. We ordered a refurbished unit from TiVo, and it froze every time we tried to go through guided setup. TiVo sent a second unit (note that we're paying deposits on these each time...to the tune of $400 a pop), which seemed to work. We had Comcast come out and reinstall cablecards - this time a multi-stream card, and everything seemed to work at first. However, within 24 hours, I turned on the tv to find the TiVo completely frozen on an image, displaying it with a purple-green tone. I had to unplug it to clear the freeze, and aside from rebooting itself 20 minutes later, the TiVo seemed to work again. Then it froze again the same way yesterday and again this morning.
The freezes seem to happen once a day (at least so far), but otherwise the TiVo works fine. Still, this is just unacceptable. I called TiVo support yesterday, got a case number, etc., but honestly am tired of this hassle. From my conversation with support yesterday, all they're going to offer is to send yet another box, but at this point Comcast is looking like the lesser evil (shocking!). We've had TiVo for over 5 years (starting with a 40 hr series 2) and really don't want to stop our service, but I've been less than impressed with TiVo's response on this and think it's ridiculous that I should have to put out nearly a grand in deposits because they can't send me a unit that works.
Any ideas? Issues I may be missing? I just want this thing to work. I've looked for other freezing threads but they seem to focus on analog signals or on hard drive expanders, neither of which apply to my issue.
