I have a Tivo Series 3 and Brighthouse for a cable provider.
The other evening I couldn't sleep about 3am and went to my living room. My tivo was recording a paid commercial broadcast. The next day when I checked what was going on, there was no program in the Now Playing List and nothing in the history file of the ToDo List.
Any ideas on this.

The paid program was probably not listed in the guide information and TiVo thought it was actually another show. Check your recently recorded shows, one of them is probably really a paid commercial broadcast.
Were you actually thinking of watching it? Or were you just curious?

That is how Tivo records the promos (advertisements) you see on Tivo Central. It will record on what typically looks like an infomercial channel early in the AM.

I use Tylenol PM; very reliable, almost no sleep hangover.

Also more info.. this does not take up your recording space, it takes up an already allocated section of the drive..

Uhm, I think showcase info is all downloaded when the unit phones home, no?

No, the Showcase video all comes from the informercial recordings. As bandwidth becomes cheaper, it may be more cost-effective to push it over the internet. However, there are still people on dialup where it wouldn't work. And I can already hear the howls from people who don't want their internet bandwidth used for downloading video ads.
At one time they also used infomerical time for program data. Here's an old thread (http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?postid=984048#post984048) on that subject.

Over the air, or cable as the case may be. You'll find it in program listings as "Teleworld Paid Program"
