I am very surprised I maxed out my 1tb drive with the recording I do... I noticed because I have all 180 episodes of Seinfeld (none HD) and then a few days later it was down to 168, a few were deleted to make room for other Season Passes above Seinfeld.

I went through and changed some season passes I have set in HD to regular and that should help me in the future, I was just very surprised to max out the 1tb western digital drive.

Just upgraded my TiVo HD to a 1TB WD drive. Hopefully I won't be hitting the wall any time soon, but then I won't be archiving the entire series of Seinfeld on it!! ;)

180 episodes = +/- about 90-94 hours, isn't that about right?

Yep, each one is a half hour. I was sure not to record those in HD for this reason...

Why don't you use the Tivo Desktop to copy those recordings to a drive connected to your computer for archiving?

If his cable company is anything like mine the CCI byte has been set to not allow this.

A question along these lines, how much space does digital SD use compared to digital HD?

Copy them to your PC, edit out the commercials then copy them back. Videoredo works well.

I get around 6:1 on Comcast. SD recordings take about 1GB/hr, HD averages more like 6GB/hr. It depends somewhat on the type of show that you record.

I put a 500GB in the S2 and THAT'S a fun way to live. I set up as many Season Passes I could imagine (on basic cable). Every weekend or so I got and delete dupes and end up with 16 shows deleted.

I think it's deleting shows on me but I can hardly detect it.

Now if get that much space for HD shows om the S3. I guess it would take 8TB.

(I got "cannot record" on the S3 just becuase Ice Road Truckers has scheduled a marathon.)

I have a 1TB on the shelf I'll likely throw into another S2 DT.

Heck, on my S3, I have a 1 TB drive almost filled with *Tivo Basic* quality recordings.

I have finally started seriously transferring some recordings to my 1.5 TB external computer drive... (e.g. a couple of "er" episodes, which were at Best quality, one of the few things I recorded at anything but basic) I also have been transferring some of the old talk shows I have recorded.. I used to save them to my DVD recorder.. but am
hoping I can convert them and get the audio out/edited easier.

(I'm doing it on a Mac, so unfortunately there's no way to *edit* the recordings simply without reconversion. I can download them with Tivo Transfer, use tivodecode to get a supposely-MPEG file out -- but it will only play in mPlayer.. I'll have to convert it, losing quality, to get something out I can play/edit with Quicktime Player.)

I have no use for watcing the files on my PC, I like the 1tb database right on my Tivo... I can fine comb my Season Passes if size becomes an issue...

That sounds like a lot of work, I would rather delete a folder of Who Wants to be a Millionare (10 episodes and be in a similar spot)

Don't watch them on your PC. If you archive them on a PC and Tivo desktop or some other tivo server software, you can get it off your tivo for stuff you are actively watching and you can just use MRV to bring it back when you want to watch and you can add to the storage a lot easier on a PC than you can a tivo (many MULTI TerraBytes). Think in terms of every DVD, Blueray disk, and Internet download you have or plan to have available for MRV to your tivo. Do you think you might see a use for it now?

Yes, that sounds much much better, sorry. I was thinking you were suggesting to transfer to my Laptop and watch as I travel... I will look into this archiving and MRV, this is a good idea.

Funny I thought the 1tb to me was "Unlimited" even with HD recording and I soon found out that is not the case. :D Thanks for the suggestions.

Many TCF posters are probably wondering why the great majority of (cable) DVR users don't seek to get involved with the wonderful world of fiddling with TiVo and a PC to simply watch TV.

I don't think most of people "fiddle" with their Tivo. Once its set up most people just leave it be. This forum is an anomaly as far as tivo users as a whole go in that regard. The average user isn't cracking open his tivo to replace the stock drive with a 1TB drive.

Feature creep on the other hand I think could be an issue if it is taking you farther away from the core job of watching video content on a TV. Most notably ordering Dominoes Pizza from your tivo. Fandango is a stretch but at least it is video content you are ordering, Stocks, weather, games should go. Movie rental, Netflix streaming, and video file playback is just an extension of the core job and the try to keep the look and feel the same.
