I upgraded my drive today (1TB woohoo!) and as I was going to pull my TiVo from my entertainment center it occurred to me that I didn't know how to properly shut down the device so as to not corrupt the filesystem(s).

Is there a way to gracefully shut down a TiVo HD or is your only option to just yank power?

You can go to the reset menu on the tivo and select restart, then pull power during the powering up screen.

Or you can just yank the power. The TiVo will recover from that just fine.

I've always assumed that TiVo's employ some sort of journaled or logged file system. So recovery is a self-repair type of scenario. That said, I've never had one not come back up just fine after removing power.

Hard to imagine TiVo could ever have been a viable product if it couldn't recover from power interruptions!

Stick out your pinkie finger as you yank the cord.

Ha, that would be delicate.:D

The computer geek/DBA in me always winces when I yank that power cord. I always have this urge to find a keyboard and /sbin/shutdown -h now.

Journaled file system or not, I wish there was a clean shutdown option.

You can go to the reset menu on the tivo and select restart...BTW, that's identical to pulling the power cord. "restart" does not shutdown any processes, close any files, or unmount anything. It just *poof* restarts exactly as if you'd just powered it on.

I think this takes the prize for the most graceful way to shutdown tivo.
