First of all I want to say that I know there are lots and lots of threads that deal with upgrading hard drives. However, I am extremely new at this and I am having trouble finding a step-by-step instructable for this procedure.

I have a Tivo Series 2 model TCD24004A with a Maxtor 40GIG ATA 133 hard drive that has gone bad. I have taken the hard drive out and need to replace it with a new hard drive. I would like to buy a Western Digital 500GIG, 8MB cache, 7200 RPM hard drive. My first question would be, is that drive support by tivo and will it work?. Is there a list of supported hard drives for each tivo model?

My next question is since I have a bad hard drive and I am replacing it with a new hard drive, can I use MFSlive or do I need to use InstanctCake? I have downloaded the latest version of MFSLive, release v1.4 02-01-2009, and have made my boot CD. I have a USB adapter to connect the new IDE drive to my computer. What I don't have though are the instructions to image the new hard drive. Once I reboot my computer with the boot CD, what are the commands to actually image the new hard drive with the tivo software?

I know DVRupgrade could take care of all this for me, but it is fun trying to figure this out. If anyone has any step-by-step instructions for replacing a bad hard drive from beginning to end that would be great if I could get a copy. Thanks for reading my message and I appreciate any help.

Yes, almost any PATA drive will work including the one you referenced

Since your original Maxtor drive is toast you have to get an image for a TCD240 and Instantcake is one way to do that.

As far as step by step instructions the MFSLive web site has complete instructions for what you want to accomplish.
