do you need a working modem

brother tivo has died and after reading posts on here it appears that its the modem, now he was planing on getting a cachcard and using the internet to call out would this still work?

As far as I know what you have described will work.

I thought you needed to do something to disable the modem check when tivo boots, however http://www.tivoland.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7 implies you do not.

The actual "dial up" over the internet using a cache card works fine for me so you should be all set.

You don't need to disable the modemtest if the cachecard drivers are set to do the daily call via the internet.

But either way, you still need to put the drive into a PC, whether to disable the modemtest or install the cachecard drivers.
