Using an SATA to PATA adapter, what's the biggest hard drive that can be used in an HR10-250? 1.5TB are getting pretty cheap but will they work?

Currently not, something about the Tivo's partitions only allows 1.2TB of the 1.5 to be addressed. You are probably better off with a 1TB drive at the moment.

So a 1.5TB drive won't work at all or just won't use the full drive?

It may or may not work. There have been issues reported with using the 1.5TB drives in a Tivo. I've seen 1TB drives for as little as $65 with free shipping so you might want to consider dropping in a pair of 1TB models if you really need that much capacity. I've built numerous dual drive HR10-250's over the years and never had any problems due to excess heat from the extra drive.
