Not as exciting as the first ep. Since we all knew Jack would be back it wasn't really a surprise but for some reason the concept of a man who cannot die being encased in concrete really creeps me out (as does thinking about him being buried for 2000 years last season).

Can someone remind me of the backstory of his daughter ??

I actually have all 5 eps but really only time to watch one per day so I am syncing with the BBC America showings so far.

My only real complaint is that with 2 of the team from last year gone it all seems a bit constrained. Also I keep thinking that if this disaster was really happening Doc Who would show up and it's odd that he doesn't (in their universe anyway).

This is our first exposure to Jack's family.

As to the Doctor. He can't be everywhere, locationwise or timewise. Earth would have to solve some of it's own problems.

Are you sure it's the first time ??? I know we encountered the old lady who he had been with when younger. It all seems quite familiar.

Living forever combined with time travel makes for some confusing history :)

Yes, this is the first we've seen of Jack having family on Earth.

I really hate, HATE the person who made the decision to run the crawling message across the bottom of the screen, after EVERY commercial break saying "if you want BBCAmerica in HD, contact your cable company". It is unsupportable for them to do it several times in one show, and during a premiere episode. Aarghh! What were they thinking. it is very distracting, to say the least! If their intent was to tick off viewers, they really succedded with me!

Oh, I enjoyed the episode, especially the truck full of potatoes.

Well, after having this big promotion of something that most viewers can't see, I think they are desperate to get people to put pressure on providers to add their HD channel.

It seemed strange to me that they would expect providers to add their channel immediately when it went online, but they made such a big deal out of the opening week that I figured maybe they had some arrangements worked out instead of just going online and hoping for the best.

Maybe someone confused "weak opening" with "opening week". :D

And he doesn't tend to seek out problems to solve, but rather explore and solve problems as they find him.

The TARDIS has a habit of taking him where he needs to be. :)

We don't have it here in Houston, on Comcast.

I bet they let providers know quite awhile ago it was coming, it wasn't a shock to my provider.

They had promoted the startup of the HD channel for over a month. We all knew it was coming. They promoted it WITH the Torchwood miniseries. They did not need to have a crawling message during the show itself!

Crawlers are a way of life now.........get use to them.

The bug logo's in the corner use to drive me crazy, now I don't notice them.

And apparently the TARDIS, like some posters here, already knows how things end, and therefore has determined that the Doctor doesn't need to be there. :D

They aren't trying to let us or providers know that HD is available; they are trying to get us to bug our providers to add the now-available channel. That was my point.

Yeah, I got it. I'm just not happy with it. I must be the only one that finds these things annoying, OR, maybe that's the point. If we got it on HD, there wouldn't be a crawler.

No thread for day 3. Maybe this isn't as popular as I thought.

There is no way that a solid cube of concrete that large would have set up that quickly. It made a comical visual though, them escaping on a giant fork lift, carrying tons of concrete, and military couldn't chase them down.:D It made a very satisfying crack when they dropped it.

With the HUB gone, how are they going to moinitor the rift? I thought that was the whole point of the Cardiff site. Is the city going to have to fight off the Weevils and stuff by themselves now?

I really, REALLY dislike that military woman. I dearly hope before the miniseries ends, she gets eaten by the aliens, blown to bits, buried in concrete herself, has someone plant a bomb in her, or some other suitable demise.

A technical question: These seem unusually long, are they uncut? If so, it begs the question, were all previous episodes of Torchwood this long? If so, since I now can playback region 2 PAL DVDs, maybe I should be buying them from Acorn(?) or whoever.

Yes, BBCA is showing these uncut.

It also seemed to be the wrong shape. It was too vertically tall, instead of horizontally long (if that makes any sense). The gurney Jack was laying on wouldn't have fit in that "cube" unless it was laying flat, and that's not how Ianto ripped it out of the wall.

More good one-liners in this episode, especially from Rhys and Gwen's former partner. It's really too bad Owen and Tosh aren't around as I'm sure Owen would have some good zingers.

Love how Ianto lost the car too ...
