Well, that pretty much sucked. Handan and I are ready to bail out on this train wreck.

Why couldn't they have brought back the woman from last season that hurt her ankle? They bring back that tub 'o lard instead?!?!

And seriously, the "cooks" are so clearly encouraged to act like idiots... it's not even funny.

At least they added some new menu choices. Finally an episode with no rissoto or beef wellington. :p

+1

You would think after his medical scare last season he would've lost some weight. He's bigger than ever!

I liked this premiere. And that loose canon needs to go to therapy not a reality show!

That new salmon dish looked suspiciously like the wellington, just with salmon instead of beef.

Once again, it's hard to believe that any of these people will get to run GR's fancy new restaurant.

Ahh comeon, if everyone was normal then nobody would watch the show.

I'm wondering why this show is on so early in the year, normally we'd watch Kitchen Nightmares around this timeframe. ???

I liked Robert and hope he hangs around a long time. I'm sure even though you don't see it but he probably can give his team lots of help on how things run in HK.

Wonder if it would have been legal to use an assembly line method when cleaning the shrimp. Would have been easy to verify the previous step was completed and would have been fast.

'Deer in headlights' lol Unfortunately she was the best looking one of the bunch.

Oh and what about whats her name (previous winner) back. ha

I haven't watched this yet (heck, I am not even sure Tivo picked it up) but I had to laugh because the first person I thought of when I read ^^ was "LACEY?"

Then after a few more posts, I realized it was Robert.

Robert I can live with. Lacey, no way in hell.

I didn't mean Lacey. (hells no!). I was referring to that Asian woman that left in the first (or was it second?) episode.

That loose cannon who kept saying I ain't no bitch has to be a plant.
Lovely reminds me of the horrible Lacey. Hiding in the storeroom for 45 minutes should automatically get you sent home. Lazy good for nothing.

I don't think anyone is asking you to believe that. The restaurant they get to be head chef at is not one of Ramsay's. ;)

Yeah, they should've brought back Ji from last season. She rocked the house until her twisted ankle caused her to leave early in the season.

I watch this show for the train-wrecks so this 2 hour opener was slap-knee funny. Can't believe Joseph used to be a Marine unless he was dishonourably discharged. He'd have been in the brig if he went off on a superior like he did with Ramsey. And the Van vs Jean-Philippe fight was hilarious.

haha, yeah i caught that too.. i really thought that texas guy would have blown up at ramsey with the rate he was going that second half.

it's like the entire blue team was pulled out of an institution, but i have my pick all set as the guy with the long hair who wore that hat the whole episode, forgot his name.

too bad robert is out of practice, i really liked him last season

I really can't believe the girl who made French Toast was allowed to stay. (Amanda?)

That guy is REALLY REALLY angry. I find it hard to believe he was in the military. You can take drill instructors and CO's in your face but you can't take a chef (who asked you a simple question) especially when that is what you signed up for.

"Thats not what I am here for". Really G.I. Jerk? Your here to be a featured head chef and the first day you want to throw it away.

He needs help. Before the show really got started he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder and was just an angry guy. I can understand the texas guy (Van?) lil beef with JP. And vice versa. But I don't undstand G.I. Jerks beef.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Robert is back. His commentary alone is worth him being back. I do think he is bigger though.

The womens teams seems to be full of Lacey clones. Tannile, Lovely, Amanda all need to get the boot. Tannile started off strong in the first hour with he leadership but as soon as the shrimp came in her stock dropped and it seems like her "leadership" was just her running her mouth.

I predict Gordan Ramsey victory over G.I. Jerk by way of Steak knife slice and dice.

I knew the biscuit guy would be gone fast. Figured French toast girl would be a close second.

I would have thought they would bring back Ji as well. I know they brought back Robert because his commentary last season was about half of what made the season worth watching. I dont think we need another season of him though, we just need someone else thats humorous.

It seems that many, if not most chefs/cooks are heavy smokers/drinkers.

Isn't the show actually later this year than usual? In 2007, the final was in early/mid-August, as I recall. (It's possible that it switched places with So You Think You Can Dance? because that show is moving to the fall and they didn't want season 5 ending so close to season 6 - among other things, it wouldn't give them enough time to do proper auditions.)

Why couldn't they have brought back the woman from last season that hurt her ankle? They bring back that tub 'o lard instead?!?!
Maybe there's something on her website (http://chefji.com) that indicates a reason why they wouldn't invite her back. (On one page, it says that she's not sure she would want to go back if Fox asked her.)

I enjoyed both hours. This season does look a bit more train-wreckish than usual. I hope Mr Smartass is gone soon. geez, I look forward to seeing how his 'in yer face' confrontation w/Gordon ends up (me thinks Mr Smartass doesn't win this one) ;)

The biscuits & gravy deal (while I love them) was a crack up. Are you freaking kidding me? Serving b&g to Gordon Ramsay?? Maybe I should try out too...I could beat the hell out of that one.

I also will look forward to the departure of Whoopi. I don't think I like Cowboy Bob either (legend in his own mind...that's always a put off for me).

Do they always start out with 16? For some reason I thought that was more than usual but then I don't remember so well anymore.

I'm sure it was a matter of editing, but I think GR should have listened to JP on that one deal with Cowboy Bob (or whatever his name is). If I were JP, I'd be pissed.

I was LMAO when somebody (forgot who) didn't get the chicken cooked through so they cut it up and threw it into a saute pan. o-mg! The level of ineptitude is truly staggering with some of them, but I enjoy watching anyway.

Was the diner guy a real contestant? Or just a convenient vehicle to bring Robert back in? And isn't Robert way too fat to work a line? Even Paul Prudhomme didn't get seriously fat (and isn't anymore) till he was already a executive chef/owner. Although I'm not a chef, I've been in more than my fair share of restaurant kitchens and Robert is about 100lbs north of being able to work in any of them. As for the season? The usual group of bumbling incompetents that make the worst Top Chef contestant look like Thomas Keller in comparison. How many tons of scallops and pasta does this show throw out in a season?

TonyTheTiger
07-22-2009, 09:20 PM
Of course GR wins the face-off. The guy was born in Glasgow which automatically makes him tougher than ANY marine!

Van was dangerously closer to being thrown out than the show suggested, I think. JP is the Maitre'D, and as such, is the GR of front-of-house. He should be in charge and Van had no right whatsoever to question him (although I think JP played it up a little too).

A bigger train wreck than last season? Sure. I just wish voiceover guy would stop insisting that next week's episode is 'the most shocking ever', EVERY week!

why do I watch this show? I'm not sure I enjoy laughing at the contestants any more.

Kicking a guy off the show in the middle of service to bring back a former contestant that's in the dining room? I think Louie was never intended to be there beyond a partial service.

Editing with "deer in headlights girl" was funny, though. :D

Okay, so I know this is a train wreck series and all the OMG moments are great for reality TV. But I would still love a season where they actually have somewhat decent chefs (a la Top Chef) just to see if they can hack it, or if it REALLY IS that hard. Kinda like Top Chef Masters.

I'd like to see the UK version of the show, to compare the level of sensationalism.

Really sucks that there was always a plan in place to kick someone out on the first episode to make room for the fat guy (forget his name) from last season.

Yeah, hardly 'fine dining'!

It looks like Louie was set up for a fall and this story bears that out. I would think he would have more to say if what happened really, er, happened in the way it was shown. As he said, it's all in the editing.

What a glorious train wreck....loved every second of it!

You know, the guys really got screwed. Gordon had to fire a guy right of the bat to bring back Robert....so they lose a guy there. Then the girls loose and Ramsey moves Robert over to the girls so even though the girls lost, they have 1 more person and have Robert! Doesn't sound much like loosing.

justapixel
07-25-2009, 04:51 PM
I was hesitant even recording it this season. It's all so formulaic now - you know what's going to happen from show to show. They won't complete services for four weeks, Ramsey will call somebody a donkey, he'll scream and throw food - customers will complain, blah. I don't think the casting has been very inspired either. Change it up a little!

But, I did like Robert and I'm glad he's back and will keep watching for him. I was sad to see him even bigger than last year though - you'd think the poor guy would have had a reality call but I guess his addiction is entrenched. My BIL was like that and eventually died of a heart attack - he never could control his food intake. :(

I knew it was going to be bad when the lady served Risotto as her signature dish and it was awful. If I was going to be a contestant on HK I'd be practicing Risotto, Beef Wellington and pan-fried scallops until I could make them perfectly every time!

I also knew it was going to be bad when the men said they didn't know the recipes just before HK was opened. Sheesh.

you can make risotto for cheap.

scallops are more

I would guess beef wellington is the most expensive. Also, probably the trickiest because you need to get both the meat cooked to the right doneness and the pastry crust baked right. The key is to get the size of the piece of meat right so it all comes together at the same time.

I grew up in Leominster and eat at the 5050 quite often. Decent diner food, considering the complete lack of diners in the area...and sausage gravy over biscuits is one of my favorite breakfasts, but no way am I serving it to Gordon Ramsey.
