If one has a Tivo that is on a monthly plan and under the initial 12 month commitment, is it possible to change to a lifetime plan before the initial 12 months is up?

Only if you are within the first 30 days of the plan. After that, you need to finish out the original commitment, and then you can get lifetime. You can go to your Tivo account online at Tivo.com and schedule a future plan.
