Seagate Outlet Center is currently selling the Maxtor OT3 750Gb external USB drive for $49.99 with free shipping. Inside the case is supposed to be a 750GB PATA drive . In order to use it in an older Tivo you would have to crack open the case, but for my needs its cheap and perfect. The downside is only a one year warranty.

The downside is that by taking the drive out of the case you probably voided the warranty altogether. Check the label and see if there isn't a disclaimer that says this is the case. I have a Fantom exterior drive that contains a WD SATA drive and it says that the warranty is null and void if I open the case.

In the case if it breaks... you may try to use HD's SN and submit warranty request from their web site. I did couple of times for a bare or retail HD warrany, it works each time.

I've had the same experience. Don't try and send the case back. RMA the bare drive.

Has anyone confirmed that the drive in the enclosure is in fact a PATA drive instead of a SATA drive. I'm very tempted to get a couple of these so I can upgrade some of my Pioneer TiVos.

Arrived today, it is indeed a PATA drive, Seagate model # ST3750640A. Seagate website shows the drive itself as having a five year warranty.

Thanks for the confirmation. Unfortunately, I waited too long to pull the trigger on these items. The sale is over. :(

Oh well, next time.

The Maxtor OT3 drives will once again be available in about 10 minutes from the Seagate outlet sale. The link in the first post will take you to the updated sale. The downside is that this time they are $20 more at $69.99.
