View Full Version : version 11.0d Upgrade woes

I have a TiVoHD upgraded to a 1 TB WD10EVCS internal drive. Everything was perfect for me for a few months after the upgrade until a new software release was released. When that happened, I woke up one morning to the television showing "no signal" and the TiVo completely unresponsive - not even the amber light shows activity of the remote. Obviously I have to reboot the DVR at that point, power down, wait 15 seconds plug back in and teh unit halts regularly at the Almost there screen.

At that point, I re-imaged the drive with the original, reinstalled and the machine worked perfectly. It took an update later that week and all was well.

This morning we woke up to teh same thing. It is really a bummer if I have to re-image, or even restore from a backup (which I took the last time after I set up Season Pass differences...) because there is still a lot of changing to do...

I have tried to fix the bootpage with winMFS with no luck and am at a loss as to what to try next. I am thinking I might try to take a new backup and restore it just to see what happens, but I thought I ought to post up here as well.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated...

So I am really confused now. I had tried fixing bootpage options 1 and 2 with no success. I tried fixing swap space with no success. As I mentioned, I planned to take a backup and restore that same one.

I opted for some reason to pause after the backup completed and decided to try one last time to boot the DVR. It booted proper and everything is in place properly... I am running on 11.0d-01-2-652.

What on earth could taking hte backup have done to correct teh issue - I did not restore anything at all. I am thrilled, but would love to understand what the heck just happened.

No insight on this from this community? Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this and if I will have the same trouble with the next update?

Am I really the only one experiencing this "issue"?

I haven't seen any other reports of that issue.

When you re-imaged, did you do a truncated backup and restore? Or a full mfscopy? Obviously, a mfscopy will simply copy any corrupt data.

If you already tried a truncated backup and restore, send me a pm.

When I rebuilt, I did another full mfscopy - which did do the trick for me - I presume due to the fact that I just upgraded my life to upgrade, not to solve a dying HDD, so that original image is most certainly intact and proper.

This time, all it took was taking a backup - not restoring, which I found totally odd.

I am happy to take this to PM, I just thought that I couldn't possibly be alone in this :)

I had "no signal" on most of my HD stations immediately after the latest software upgrade but a cold reboot fixed mine.

mooneb75, how long had your tivo been doing this? Mine was doing the same thing starting back almost 3-4 weeks ago. I thought it was a hard drive issue as well. I bought a new 1TB drive to replace a previously upgraded 1TB and did a mfscopy. This did not work as the new drive behaved the same. I then took my original Tivo hard drive and did another mfscopy to the new drive and everything has been fine for a couple days now. Somebody else mentioned it could be an issue with a software upgrade and it looks like they were right. Now I'm worried that it might happen again. Luckily I didn't have too many recordings on my Tivo but if I had I would have been extremely upset that I had to lose them all.

Mine has now done this twice over the past 4-6 months (whenever the upgrade prior to 11.0d was pushed). Both times, it was an update that triggered the behavior, but any other boot/reboot was a non-issue...

Now that we see this has happened to more than jist me, perhaps we candraw some correlations.

For me, both times I have seen this behavior I was running an upgraded TB drive (same drive each time).

The first time, imaging back to the initial state of the TB drive (meaning doing another full mfscopy from the original drive that the THD shipped with) corrected the issue, and the machine's next try at updating itself went properly. At that time I was excited about having modded the TiVo at all and did not think to explore the other possibilities of WinMFS...

This time, I took a methodical approach and tried all of the tools in WinMFS, feeling like, what's the worst that can happen? Re-image back to original? NP...

So I tried the fix boot page options 1 and 2 - with a boot attempt after each. Allowing 20+ minutes for the Almost There screen to go away on each attempt. Once neither of those worked, I tried the fix swap space and tried another boot... Same result. My next option was going to be to re-image from the original hdd again, but I thought I'd take a backup of my current setup and so I ran all three backups from WinMFS and for some reason decided to give it one last shot before I lost cpontent. Glad I did, since it has been dreamy since...

I am not sure why takibg the backups would help, but that was what pushed the issue off the cliff for me.

As a side note, in my quest for answers I stumbled on the SPSpS code which pointed me to look further - we love the quick-gone play bar and the clock on screen!

And sorry for my typos - thumbing it from the blackberry...

mooneb75, has your problem reappeared? I came home last night to a non working Tivo. It's been fine for the past 3 weeks. Can I go in and see when the last software update was pushed through?

Mine has remained solid since the repair process noted above...

Do you have access to WinMFS? I would love to know if the process of simply running all three backups will work for anyone else...

LMK if I can help...

Here are the processes for each. I found that pausing whatever you are watching and pressing the down button to clear the more info selection helps get these in place easier since the "select" entries in the sequence then do not select anything...

Enjoy!

Check the Time

Your TiVo and television can become one of the biggest, most expensive clocks you own by entering the following button sequence:

Select, Play, Select, 9, Select
Progress Bar, Be Gone--Quicker

Annoyed with the lingering progress bar at the bottom of the screen? Make it fade out faster by entering the following button combination:

Select, Play, Select, Pause, Select
