So after seven years, with more help than I should have needed, my TiVo is finally networked, bringing with it the wonders of TiVoWeb.
But the wonders are intermittent.
TiVoWeb is sometimes reasonably snappy, and sometimes extraordinarily slow (eg sometimes the browser even times out reading the top level) - and with no obvious correlation to when I might expect TiVo to be busy. Is this normal?

Hmmm - a really difficult question to answer. I would say normal-ish. In the same way that sometimes travelling to work is slow, and sometimes fast. TivoWeb's responses depend on other traffic on the network.

There are issues with some routers/switches and the traffic generated by TiVoWeb.
I borrowed a "no name" switch from work when I first set up TiVoWeb and had all types of funnies/slowness that I was not seeing compared to a PC connected via a cross over cable. Now using Linksys & Netgear switches & routers at home and have no issue with TiVoWeb.
Also I have seen issues with TiVoWeb data over the Internet being blocked by some ADSL routers as "DOS traffic" (denial of service). Pages render OK, albeit very slowly and router log is full of DOS entries. Changing to a propper router and/or disabling DOS in firewall cured that one.

Mixing half and full duplex stuff on a network is a recipe for intermittent slowness.
On the PC, make sure the network card driver is set for 100Mb full duplex - not automatic! The tivo I think defaults to full duplex 100Mb (if only it would work that fast!). Then check the spec of your switch to see if it's handling the traffic and not flashing collision warnings.
