View Full Version : Extracting shows directly from hard drive?

Hi everyone. Need some help.
Long story short, I have an old, dying S2 TiVo that is having difficulties. I have some irreplaceable recordings on there. I am having a hard time pulling them down with TiVo Desktop as the TiVo occasionally drops off the network (using a Tivo WiFi G adapter with 100% signal sitting within 6 feet of the access point) and sometimes sponaneously reboots. I am waiting to get this stuff pulled off so I can decommission this thing and install a new S3.
So to simplify the process I would like to just take the hard disk out of the S2, pop it into a USB enclosure, mount it on my PC and pull the shows off that way.
Can this or something similar be done?

Unfortunately that won't work due to file system and encryption issues. You have two other options.
You could try to use WinMFS to "clone" the drive to a new hard drive or you could move the Tivo closer to your router and use ethernet to connect it. You don't need to connect a TV or Coax for this. Then you could copy the recordings without using wireless.

Unless TiVo uses a proprietary file system that shouldn't be an issue (and if they do, they're supposed to open source it, I think), but I'm curious about the encryption. Is it different from the existing encryption used on transferred files that the Media Access Key in Tivo Desktop opens up for you?
Unfortunately the box in question is a middle-age S2 and doesn't have an Ethernet port on the back. I had a USB-wired adapter but it was shoddy and unreliable. Otherwise I agree it would be a superior option. But I'm not going to buy another USB ethernet adapter just to use once to dump an old TiVo.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Aside from the fact that discussion of video extraction isn't permitted, it requires hardware modification, etc.
You may want to try some other TTG tool like pyTiVo or kmttg. You may have better luck than you did with TiVo Desktop.

Can this or something similar be done?Did you ever figure this out? If so, please send me PM (with some details) since it's not suppose to be talked about on the forum. Thanks...
