I have aTivo series one without a membership. I'm happy programing manually. Don't want to pay for service but would like to change to a daul tuner Tivo. My question is would a dual tuner box work the same as my series one allowing me to manually program or would a membership be mandatory? Thanks for any help.

You will have to have a subscription.

TiVo now sells their equipment at a loss, hence some subscription is mandatory. Basically, you're getting a $100 discount on the hardware price.

BTW, if you *want* a manual recorder, IMHO Tivos aren't really good for that. Yes, I sometimes use manual recordings, and would possibly use a S1 as a backup recorder for some of my analog channels if I really needed another tuner...
But for regular use as a manual recorder, its UI *for manual recordings* is IMHO worse than devices made to do manual recordings. Are there any multi-tuner devices intended for manual recordings? I'm not sure... but some of the non-Tivo hard drive/DVD recorders are cheap enough you could get a couple of them.
