Is it possible to have an HD DVR with out using the cable cards>
What is the down side if you can?
Can you still program 2 shows while watching a programmed show or do you lose that capability?

Without cable cards, you won't get guide data for the digital cable channels. You will get guide data for any analog cable and OTA channels. You can manually scan for any unencrypted QAM digital cable channels and watch and manually record. You maintain dual tuning capability without cable cards. You will not get any encrypted channels, typically premium channels like HBO without cable cards.

Its a lot easier to be able to use season passes and wish lists for the digital channels, without cable cards, you lose some of the great flexibility of Tivo to find and record content.

No, none of the Series 3 models will work with a set top box. You will not get VOD with or without the cable cards. If connected to a broadband network with internet access, you can gain access to lots of on demand type services, Netflix, Amazon, You Tube, etc.

You could keep a cable box and connect it directly to another input on your TV for VOD.
