OMG, what a tear jerker. My condolences to Jake and his family.

I grew up with a friend who had rheumatoid arthritis. Wasn't til I started getting older with joint aches and pains that I had any idea how much pain she had to be in all the time. And yes, some of the kids made fun of her because she couldn't walk very well. Sounds a lot like Jake's sister, very sad.

Yeah, I can't imagine being out at sea and not being able to get home right away when something like that happens.

I'm puzzled, too about what the crews wear. it seems the standard dress is a rainsuit, backed up by a sweatshirt hoodie and jeans and other cotton clothing.

Don't these guys realize that stuff like cotton is ridiculous to be wearing in that kind of weather? If you're gonna make $30 or 40k (and up) for a couple months work, wouldn't you spend a few hundred on real outdoor stuff like polar fleece or polypropolene or at least a wool sweater?

Sig is a tough bastard but has a soft little heart. I really believed him when he said he'd bust through any ice, risking his boat to get Jake home.

I was also was impressed by Sig, turning the boat around, burning thousands of dollars in fuel, and missing out on some crab to get the new full share member (not greenhorn) home. I am very impressed.

Edit for spelling and got the kids "rank" wrong. I do not pay that close attention to the show.

Yup, Sig sure can be a hardass sometimes but I was really impressed by his reaction and what to do when they found out.

f/u by the After The Catch show and Johnathan Hilstrand said he wouldn't have told him, I was kind of surprised by that.

I'm guessing Johnathan is old school meaning back in the day they rarely had communication from the world. And back in the day one usually kept the bad news to themselves until after the mission.

Anyway, after Johnathan heard Jake say he really appreciated being at the funderal, Johnathan changed his mind and agreed with the decision. I give him a thumbs up for that.

Is Jake still considered a greenhorn? I thought he was made a full share hand this season? At least they were talking about it when he was running the crane thingy.

1. His name is Sig, not Sid.

2. Yes, Jake is a full share now, he's no longer a greenhorn. They did it during King crab of this year I think, or maybe it was last Opies. I don't remember which.

Yeah he "took it back", but that was just so he wouldn't sound completely like an ass, he had some time to think about it before he gave his first response and I'm pretty sure that's what he would have done.

That was just a typo, I know his name, but thanks anyhow.

I wasn't sure what it would be about rheumatoid arthritis that would have caused her to die. Anyone know? I know she would be in a lot of pain and that can certainly wear a person down.

Anyway, Jake was obviously devastated and I am glad they got him home and refused to hire someone to take his place. I am sure similar things have happened to Sig and others he knows so he knew how important it would be to get him home.

I don't know how anyone could have watched this episode without tearing up. That phone call was brutal.

As an long term auto-immune disorder the whole body is eventually affected not only the joints. This can cause fatal lung and heart problems from what would normally be a temporary issue of tissue inflammation and fluid for a person with a normal immune response.

And I thought the Katmai episode was hard to watch -- Wow.

I was just wondering why didn't they call Jake directly? Is there a relationship between him and Matt (or was it Nick?)

ETA: OK nevermind I just saw the after the catch and it was explained there.

re the different reactions between Sig and Jonathan, I think it's a partial reflection on the different ways people understand/conceive of family.

It was Nick's wife who called, and I thought that was odd too.

this is the only show that I HAVE to watch the night it airs!

I do agree with the poster that commented on why these guys seem to be wearing whatever they have laying around the closet. Of course I always say that they could als make this job a lot safer if they would just spend some money. I'm amazed at the money these boats make yet how little they put into modern day equipment and safety.

I would hate to work on the boat (I forget which one it is) that they have to dump the crab into the white buckets and then drag them to the hole! Talk about making a tough job even tougher!!!

I agree, I never understand why they don't run two crews on the boat and work 24 hours a day safely, I know they work 24+ hours now, but with the same crew. You would think they would get more crab with two crews. I guess I know the answer $$$$

Because they have quotas. A limit to the amount they're allowed to catch divided by two crews means less money for everyone.

I certainly wouldn't want to be floating on the Bering sea in that rusted out dingy!

They made it look like they were setting him adrift but in fact, there was another boat right there. Apparently, a bunch of crabbers helped get him to St. Paul - they transferred him from boat to boat. Also, Sig turned the boat around the second he heard - before he even told Jake. (all explained on After the Catch.)

I won't remember the terminology, but the guys wear some wetsuit type thing under their jackets and warm clothes. They couldn't stand on that deck 36 hours in those freezing wet temps without them. I love how there is a sauna on deck though. :)
