View Full Version : Upgrading requires clear and delete everything?

I am interested in upgrading my TiVo HD hard drive, but I'm somewhat wary if doing so will cause cable card problems. I saw on the DVRUpgrade instructions (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/installation_instructions/series3-652-replace-1.0.pdf) that putting in a new drive requires a clear and delete everything, which may cause the cable card to be unpaired. Is this required with a hard drive upgrade? Is it likely my cable co. (Cox) can re-pair the cable card over the phone?
Thank you!

You need a C&DE only if you use a prepared drive or used Instantcake or an outside image to image it. Your provider should be able to pair over the phone.

The need to CADE is when you are using a different source of the TiVo software like what comes loaded on Pre-loaded drives and Instant Cake images.
If you can upgrade using your original hard as the source and make a copy using MFSTools (MFSLive) (http://mfslive.org) this allows you to keep your settings and recordings including the Cable Card setup. Requires opening a PC and enough technical knowledge to replace hard drives in a PC.
The other option would be to send your DVR to DVRUpgrade and have the drive replaced by them using the Professional Installation Service (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/professional_installation.cfm).

Everything you need to know and what options are available to you for upgrading your TiVo HD (including how to keep your settings) can be found in the Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ sticky thread:
