I recently moved to an area that has limited cable. It will not support TIVO or even the Cable Company's DRV. I am unable to get downloads. I hooked up My Tivo and I can still set it up to record a program manually. If I cancel my TIVO membership would this ability go away ??

With only a few caveat (certain really old models), you won't be able to do manual recordings without Tivo service.

Manuel will have to buy a sub like the rest of us ;)

What do you mean it will not support Tivo? That makes no sense. If you can get a phone connection (or network connection with newer Tivo or old Tivo + third party devices to get them on an ethernet connection), then you can get Tivo data.. Tivo has the 'support' for custom cable lineups if that's necessary.

I was told by RCN cable that where I am at that I could not even get their DRV that in my area it is a one way system. I do not have a phone in the house as I use my cell phone as my phone for everything, The cable company told me that they can't even offer me internet connection till they upgrade in my area. Therefore I cant even set up a router. I want to do away with paying $12.95 a month for a service that I can't use right now. I have a Humax Tivo 800 that has the built in dvd in it so I can make a dvd out of anything that I record. So back to my original question if I cancel my Tivo contract will my Tivo unit still allow me to set up a manual recording without having Tivo service ???

I have a Humax Tivo 800R that has the built in DVD burner in it that allows me to make a dvd out of anything I record. Will it still work if I set it to record a show in the manual mode if I cancel my Tivo service ???

Uh, I thought that if a subbed TiVo couldn't connect with TiVo it'd stop functioning after awhile. If it does, under your circumstances, you'd be no better off than if it wasn't subbed. You'd be better off with a Toshiba TiVo DVD recorder which gets TiVo Basic (limited service) for free.

my first post was a light hearted attempt at letting you know you need a subscription for that HUMAX DVD model to do even manual recordings.
Now without a phone line or internet connection you can still keep the TiVo subscribed and do manual recordings. There will be no guide data and your recordings will be labelled like "ch.3 11pm"every so many months you will need to take the TiVo somewhere it can connect via phone or broadband so it knows it still has a valid sub. Not sure if that is worth 12.95 a month to you.

PS - anything you record onto the DVR can be played back or burned to a DVD whether you have a sub or not. The hassle of no sub is that you can not record anything new.

PPS - the Toshiba TiVo/DVD models and early pioneer TiVo models do come with a TiVo basic that would let you do manual recordings even without a sub or guide data. they are no longer made though so you would have to find a used one

I'm really not positive that a Toshiba TiVo Basic DVD recorder will continue to function uneventfully if it never connects; it just doesn't need a sub.

I can't use a Humax DVD recorder, but do have an old S1 that records manually (to its 30 GB HDD) without a sub. I'd sell it for $25 plus shipping.

Here's another credible idea; get one of these; they're cheap, don't need to call in or be subbed, have a digital OTA/cable tuner (but no EPG) and record to either their 160 GB HDD or to a DVD. I just bought another one!

In fact, if you can live with an 80 GB HDD, there is a cheaper version of the above DVD recorder. Unlike the above recorder, instead of a 6 hour rolling recording buffer which survives channel changes within a category, digital or analog, and can be edited and turned into recordings, this cheaper one has a Micky Mouse substitute called TIME SHIFT which can't be converted into a recording. To be fair however, the cheaper recorder doesn't share the more expensive's well known firmware glitch which causes finalizing a DVD to fail unless no future recordings are scheduled.

I'll agree the Magnavox 160 is a great machine, except for the problem with the event timer messing with DVDs being finalized.

I've decided to keep a stickie note next to my machine with my weekly recordings listed on it, as a reminder when I re-input.

EDIT:
I wonder if the ones from J & R even HAVE the finalizing problem? Seems to have a different model number, indicating a refurb, and maybe the finalizing problem is what's been changed? (Or maybe these are refurbs of the original model number, sans the "A", which didn't have the defect?)
