Hi all-

Does anyone know if it's possible to run pytivo on the AppleTV? Currently I have 2 S3's in the house with a PC running pytivo to serve out content. We have a 3rd TV that I would like to connect an Apple TV to but I'd like to keep my entire library of videos consolidated on a single "server". So if I could run pytivo from the Apple TV, I could decommission the PC and attach my current hard drive with all of the content to Apple TV.

Thanks!

That's an interesting question. I guess an Apple TV runs OS X, so, in principle, it should be possible. I wouldn't bet on good transcoding speeds.

Send me an Apple TV and I'll find out for you. :D

FWIW: I use pyTivo on an old PowerMac dual G4 500Mhz and it is able to transcode fairly high quality, PAL resolution, Divx avi's (Top Gear episodes) just a little slower than real time. I'd guess it's a little slower than the chip in the AppleTV so might actually be "good enough" depending on the content.

I'm guessing that as long as I can get Python (if it's not already there) and FFmpeg onto the Apple TV, I should be okay. It looks like the Apple TV has a 1GHz Pentium M which should be sufficient (albeit a little slow). I'll do some more research and see if it's possible to get Python and FFmpeg running.
