View Full Version : I'm so Happy... (A reverse rant)

So, like ya'll, I've had a few occasions where my TiVo has "Checked Out" on me, like when NetFlix was hung a while back and it took my TiVo 8 hours before it'd reboot.

My Backup when I had DirecTiVo was to run my attic Aerial through a diplexer and hooked up the antenna right to my TV.

However, now I have FiOS, and you can't use a diplexer. So I bought an indoor HD antenna, plugged it into the TV, and could only pull in 1 channel (KDFW Channel 4.) That sucked...

I also tried plugging my FiOS cable right into the TV to see what would happen. Ran the channel scan for about a half hour and never found anything; I figured it was because FiOS was encrypting all the stuff and the TV couldn't pull it without a cablecard, which my TV doesn't support.

So, this weekend, I was planning on running a new coax through my 130 degree attic to get the antenna to my Master Bedroom.

But yesterday I was surfing Verizon's FiOS forum (something I've never done before) and read someone marked as "Employee" say that all of the broadcast networks and several of the "Basic Cable" channels are in the clear, but you have to have a QAM tuner on the TV, which lots of TV's don't have. I assumed mine didn't since it didn't find anything on prior scans.

I went online to LG and pulled the owners manual for my TV, and it said it supports ATSC as well as QAM64 and QAM256. Huh.

Well, I went home last night, plugged the FiOS cable in, and ran the scan again, this time only in what the TV calls the "CADTV" band. I was disappointed that, as it crept slowly from channel 1 to 60, it still hadn't found anything.

But WAIT! It hit 61- found several channels. 65- found like 50 channels. 68- another 40 or so! By the time it got to the last channel number, 130?, it had found over 120 channels.

COOL! Now to go to the channel editor; there they are... All of the broadcast channels in both SD and HD (and most of the subs), and about 80 MUSIC channels (!?!).

By the time I finished filtering out all the XM, MC, and Spanish language channels, I've still got over 20.

Threw the indoor HD antenna into the trash, cancelled my plans to run cable through the attic, and now I'm set the next time my TiVo checks out on me.

Anyway, that's all for now!

Welcome to the OTA world. OTA and internet get me by just fine.

Well, it's not OTA. :) It's still FiOS, but plugged right into the TV which I didn't think worked in the first place. I've had the TV and FiOS for well over two years; that's how long this revelation took me!
