I just got our new 3 TiVos... and I am in the middle of setting them up. The Fios Cablecard installer does not show up till Thursday... and I already removed the FIOS DVRs to make room for the TiVos.
I know I read there is a way to force an upgrade to v11, so that I can watch netflix... but I cannot find it. Evidently, I am not the best searcher either.
Would someone please tell me the procedure to force a software upgrade on new TiVo units?
Thanks in advance.

I just got 3 myself. When in settings and you go to phone and network, just force it to connect. It takes 4 times, but you have probably done a few already! Then when you see the status of the connect and it says a restart is needed, you can go to restart or reset. After that you should see On Demand and can connect with Netflix and add the code. Don't forget that on your Netflix account you need to add Watch Instantly in your Q.
I just noticed that you are in Portland, too. I am in the West Hills.

Thanks... I was restarting it... and it wasn't working. ;)
I'll reconnect 4 times now to see if it works.
We are almost neighbors. I live in the Bethany area.

Great...this takes longer to type than is required...I think you will have little if any trouble. Don't forget that at one point you will need to do the restart, but until then you just force a connect in the Settings-Phone and Network screen.
Yup, I am near Saltzman and Thompson.

Hi Jim. Good advice from MSPAN. Here's the "official" info in case anyone comes looking later...
New TiVo's will receive the most current software within about 48 hours. TiVo's first priority is to download the program guide info so that it is functional almost immediately (2 days initially and then the rest over the next 24 hours). TiVo will run a bit slower for the first few days while it indexes all of the new information.
If you want to receive the upgrade ASAP you can try forcing a connection to TiVo to see if it will download. (It may take several connections before the upgrade will appear.)
1. TiVo Central
2. Messages and settings
3. Settings
4. Phone and network
5. Connect to the TiVo service now
Once the download has finished and loaded look at the "Last Successful (http://i18.tinypic.com/85w4qk8.jpg)" line on that screen or in System Information and if it says "Pending restart (http://i18.tinypic.com/89q0up2.jpg)" instead of a date your new software will automatically install at 2 a.m. your time. Or you can reboot TiVo and it will install the upgrade immediately. You will see these two screens (http://i20.tinypic.com/mh5bw9.jpg) during the reboot process when it does.
You can reboot TiVo via the menu screens:
1. TiVo Central
2. Messages & Setup
3. Restart or reset system
4. Restart the TiVo DVR
Or you can simply unplug it, wait about 10 seconds for the hard drive to spin down and plug it back in.
Enjoy your new TiVo's! (BTW, I'm just south of you both. Small world.)

Since they aren't coming until Thursday, if you already ran guided setup and the network connection worked successfully, then you can just leave it on and let it sit. It will get the updated automatically without having to do anything. Personally, I am lazy and that is the path I would take. :)

The reason that I forced the updates is so that I could get Netflix Instant Queue in the mean time. :)
I do have another question. I just recorded my first show off of terrestrial broadcast. It was HD. I was watching it during the recording process... and my sounds were not working right. I would not get the Tivo "pop" sounds when navigating menu items... and I would not get the three different toned "ba-bop" tones when I would fast forward at the 3 different speeds. However... I would get the "bong" sounds when I hit the Tivo button or made an invalid choice. Note all my technical terms to describe the sounds that TiVo makes. It must be my engineering training. ;)
Anyway... back to the point. I didn't want to restart the TiVo during the recording... so when it was done, I restarted the TiVo and now it is working properly.
I am wondering if such screw-ups are normal... or maybe I have a defective unit. Any advice?
(Rich: I had dinner at a friends house down in Lake Oswego tonight). :)

Any advice?Did you read the Using TiVo (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=7097286#post7097286) section of the FAQ? This is a common question and I've tried to answer every common question in the FAQ. Snippet:
Why don't I get TiVo's "boop" sounds on Dolby Digital channels?
If you are using your TV speakers, make sure you set Messages & Settings -> Settings -> Audio -> Dolby Digital -> Dolby Digital to PCM.
For Dolby Digital A/V receivers, the TiVo has no means to "inject" its sound effects into the Dolby Digital bitstream. The TiVo can only pass the Dolby Digital audio as it is received.
To inject its sound effects into the Dolby Digital 5.1 bitstream, the TiVo would have to decode Dolby Digital 5.1 (like your Yamaha receiver) into 5.1 uncompressed audio, inject the sounds, and then re-encode the 5.1 signal back into Dolby Digital for output. No STB or DVR has the hardware necessary to do this, and even if it did, you wouldn't want that because it would only serve to reduce audio quality.
If you don't like hearing TiVo "boop" sounds on some channels and not others, then you can disable TiVo sound effects.

I had read that... and I had set it to "Dolby Digital to PCM". It was one of the first things that I did when I set up my Tivo.

The TiVo can sometimes exhibit erratic menu behavior during the initial indexing period, but that should clear up after you've had 11.0 installed for ~48 hours.

/JimI've seen that exact behavior (missing audio prompts) after an update myself. In fact they don't work after a reboot for the first few screens on both our Series3 and TiVo HD. Seems TiVo is finding it's way for a short time. I've never had to reboot to get them to work and I suspect they would have kicked in for you anyway.
Was it a BBQ? Someone was cooking up something that smelled incredible in the neighborhood tonight...almost invited ourselves over! ;)

I suspect that was the culprit. The erratic behavior happened immediately following my upgrade from 9.x to 11.0c.

Yes, I can understand the issue! There was only supposed to be 1 BBQ in LO that evening. :D
Glad all is OK and we were able to help. I am on Comcast TV, but FIOS Internet, and Netflix is doing OK.
I do have one TiVo bug...every channel I look at has Michael Jackson...I know, cheap shot!

I have a new series 3 HD TiVo which reboots itself constantly. What is going on???
Gene in TroyWelcome to the forum, but sorry to hear that it's under frustrating circumstances. Any number of things can cause TiVo to reboot. If it's happening on a regular basis the most common cause is data corruption and/or hard drive failure.
You might try running a few of TiVo's built-in diagnostic programs called Kickstarts:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=5643823#post5643823
If that doesn't help your next step would be to call TiVo and have them check your logs, etc. TiVo support and contact info can be found here:
http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1279
Finally, the common references to TiVo here are the Series3 which looks like this:
http://i34.tinypic.com/4lhmiq.jpg
The TiVo HD which looks like this:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2nqy554.jpg
And the TiVo HDXL which looks like this:
http://i38.tinypic.com/14lim28.jpg
They are all from the "Series3" family but ensuring that you're referring to the exact model may help with your troubleshooting.
It would probably be worthwhile to read the "Troubleshooting and Repairing Your TiVo" sticky thread there:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=416062
Another great source of information is the TiVo Overview thread:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=7097281#post7097281
If you want to ask more questions about the problems your TiVo is having you'll probably get a better response in the TiVo Help Center:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=4
Hope that helps and best of luck!

I got my CCs today. The installer measured the signal strength at the ONT and also at each Tivo prior to installing the CCs. I looked at the SNR and two are oscillating between 31 and 32. The third TV is at 30. I have not noticed any problems yet.
When I returned my 3 existing DVRs to Verizon... I noticed that they have a new package with about twice as many HD stations that I already receive. It is an extra $5/month... and it also includes an internet upgrade from 15/2 to 25/15. I decided to upgrade.
Tomorrow my HP Media Smart Home server arrives.

/JimEverything sounds good. The SNR is hitting the sweet spot. Keep an eye on the RS Uncorrected errors. Have fun with your new toys!
