We currently have two Tivos. One is a S2 Dual tuner. The other is a S2 single tuner (with lifetime) that's been upgraded. I noticed on TivoBlog that Tivo is offering $100 off the price of a Tivo HD (making it $199) if we upgrade either unit. I'm assuming it would be better to upgrade the S2 dual tuner and keep the lifetime on the original S2 that we have. Would I be able to keep our MSD ($6.95 on the S2DT), or would I bump up to the higher price of $10 a month?

Any thoughts? Is the $200 price tag a good one, or should I call Tivo and see if I can get the $99 on the Tivo HD other people are mentioning?

Thanks!

I am in a similar situation as you are.

It would be more interesting to find out what would happen if I upgrade the S2 lifetime unit to a new TivoHD. I don't expect to be able to transfer the lifetime subscription for free, but I would be interested if I can do that at a discount, and keep the $7 MSD.

As far as replacing the S2DT with a new TivoHD, I would expect to be able to keep the $7 MSD since it is a straight up replacement. I would consider this deal if the lifetime transfer deal is no good. I think the only issue maybe that you are required to buy their subscription plan at the time of the purchase.

I think you have to request to cancel your Tivo before you get bumped up to a retension people for the $100 offer. It is a great offer, but it is a bit disingenuous to ask to cancel just to get the deal.

Well, I don't want to do that (be disingenuous). I may call Tivo to see what they say about this. Whenever I've called before, I've always been pleased.

On the thread that Resist pointed to (thanks, btw, had missed it totally) it looks like you can do the upgrade for $200 and they'll also allow you to do lifetime for an additional $200. That's fairly tempting. I'm going to watch both of these threads to see what people are saying.

If you get the TivoHD lifetime for $400, do let us know.

Mine came out to $500, so I am still on the fence to get a new TivoHD with lifetime or just upgrade the S2DT with $7 MSD.

That's fairly tempting.I know, but I don't want to lose the MSD of $6.95 a month on my Series 3 yet I don't want to keep the Series 2 going if I get a Tivo HD. Even with the discounts it's still expensive considering the economy.

Unless TiVo will work with you, you will lose your $7 plan. The only definite way to keep that plan would be to buy a TiVo Hd outside of TiVo, at Best Buy or Ebay for Example. Then you could simply go online to change the TSN number to the new box from the box that has the $7 plan. Otherwise, most likely they want you to buy their plan when you buy the box... partially to try and get rid of the $7 rate no doubt.

Again, unless they somehow make a good offer, I personally see that it would be best to keep the S2 with the lifetime.

Pretty decent prices can be had on Ebay and sometimes in stores, I've seen brand new sealed boxes for a TiVo HD go for about $180 on ebay, though usually around $200. Good luck!

I called Tivo - ultimately decided not to bite on their upgrade offer. The local Sears had one HD unit left at $148. I bought that. I called Tivo - I can just swap out my S2DT and keep the $7 monthly fee.

If it fails and the issue is something other than the hard drive then the repair will cost more than it is worth.

If you have any MSD at the $6.95 rate, you'll need to keep the old S2 for the priority date. But it only has to connect every 180 days or less.
