I got home the other day and my TiVo Series 3 HD box was dead. No lights, no fan and no output to my TV. I could hear the hard drive spinning and it sounded normal.

After doing some web research I came to the conclusion that I had a bad power supply. I ordered a replacement and installed it without any problems. However, I still have exactly the same symptoms. Apparently it wasn't the power supply.

I'm now worried I have a bad chip in the motherboard. Anyone have other possible causes? If it is a bad chip is there anything I can do about it?

No lights while it's "Running," or not even the TEST illumination when you first plug it in?

If the lights do NOT come on when you first plug it in, "it's dead, Jim..."

Send it in for repair.

I just started experiencing the same problem. I have no lights, no fan, but the drives definitely spin up. The TiVo is 18 months old and I bought lifetime service about 6 months ago. I have a Squaretrade warranty on this item, but they will only reimburse the cost of the unit and want to replace it, voiding my lifetime service. I am trying to get Squaretrade to fix the item, but they only seem to want to give me my money back. If I could figure out what could be done to fix this TiVo, I may be able to convince them to repair it and may consider skipping the warranty coverage if I can find a solution or repair that is less than the cost of new lifetime service!!

TiVo will transfer lifetime service to a replacement at no cost for up tor three years. You would call and order a replacement from TiVo and they would transfer lifetime to the new unit for free. They would charge you $150 for the replacement, but perhaps Squaretrade would reimburse you for that?

I called about getting the replacement, but they said that was only valid if the unit was purchased directly from TiVo. I bought this Tivo HD from Amazon.com, so they said it was not eligible. Is that incorrect information? I did call the sales number and not tech support.

It doesn't matter where you bought your original TiVo. However, the lifetime subscription can only be transferred to a replacement unit ($149) from TiVo.

If you now have an extra power supply you'll be willing to part with, send me PM.

I just wanted to post an update. I was able to work with Squaretrade to get the replacement through TiVo for $149. I am still waiting for the reimbursement, but it looks like this should work out.
