If he actually has a TivoHD and not the original Series3 model, then yes, you can. Once he boots up with the new drive, he will need to run Messages & Settings -> Restart or Reset TiVo -> Clear and Delete.

If he has CableCard(s), and a cable provider other than FiOS, then he will probably need to have the cable company "re-pair" his CableCard(s) over the phone or with a truck roll. Until he does that, many of his digital cable channels will not work because the CableCard pairing information was stored on the original drive.

To backup your TivoHD and restore the image to a new drive, follow the instructions in Section V (very bottom) of the Drive Upgrade Thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=370784). Since drive upgrades are incompatible with the "plug and play" external expansion, you and/or your friend should use a larger drive for the upgrade (up to 1.26 TB). I would suggest this 1TB drive (http://www.buy.com/prod/western-digital-av-gp-sata-300-external-hard-drive-1tb-7200rpm-serial/q/loc/101/208720180.html). If that's more than you want to spend, take a look at this 500GB drive (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-AV-GP-5400RPM-WD5000AVVS/dp/B001DNSZAK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1246612904&sr=1-1).

Note you cannot perform a backup and restore while you have the Western Digital My DVR Expander connected. You must disconnect and "unmarry" the My DVR Expander before you do the backup.

So are you saying that if he does have FIOS, the cable card pairing information is not stored on the HD so a truck roll will not be necessary in that case?

Verizon FiOS does not pair their CableCards to a specific device so you can swap them in and out of different boxes and they will work just the same.
