Want to hack hr 10-250 few qucik backup questions

Hey all I want to hack a hr 10-250 it has a 250gig drive in it. I would like to copy the software over to a different drive so I can mod and still have a backup. But I don't have a bigger drive so is it possible to copy the drive to a smaller one then the original I have read that it is not but want to ask any way if not what can I do I don't want to buy a new hdd just to mess around with.

Yes, as a backup file, which should be well under 1 GB, and will have no recordings.

If you need to keep recordings, no, you need the same size or larger drive to copy to.
