I'm looking at putting my TIVO into the bedroom so I want it to be a quiet as possible - I could possibly go for a smaller laptop 500GB drive and pay the extra but would it be worth the extra cost and hassle compared to a much cheaper and double sized 1TB drive?

..or settle on a 3.5" 500GB green sata drive?
Both the WD "green power" 500Gb and 1TB drives are equally quiet, and probably as quiet or quieter than a laptop drive.
Also check out the new samsung ecogreen drives

Also check out the new samsung ecogreen drivesThe 1TB WD10EVVS has some of the quietest seek noise (<25 bels) of any hard drive on the market right now.
BTW, stay far away from any Samsung drive. The Spinpoints have been problematic and my personal experience with their brand new "green" drives found that they do NOT work in TiVo at all. More here:

A full list of recommended drives can be found on the comprehensive FAQ sticky thread linked below my sig.
Happy upgrading!

Ah, but does that advice about the Samsungs apply to the Series 1 (the only Tivo we have here in the UK)? I think blindlemon is testing these and his experience is probable more relevant to our situation.
Also thanks for the link to your FAQ but as it doesn't cover the Series 1 its not much use to us :)

PaulHa, wasn't even paying attention. Should have read the thread title first. :o Our Series1 is on the closet shelf now (although we did put it to good use when we lived in New Zealand). Still a great piece of equipment IMHO.

The new 500gb EcoGreen SATA drives seem just fine with an IDE-SATA converter and I have a 1TB EcoGreen about to go on test shortly.
The WD Green Power drives are fine too, but some other WD SATA and IDE drive suffer from a firmware incompatibility that makes them invisible to the Series 1 TiVo's BIOS and hence unusable.
Cheers

SteveInteresting. Seems to be just the opposite of what we've experienced on this side of the pond, S1's Vs S3's and THD's.

The WD Caviar Blue drives don't seem to work on the US Series 1s either.
